how hard would it be to make a microwave gun, parabolic reflector ray-gun style? it'd be pretty sweet to cook hotdogs from across the room.

Give it to some college students. I'm sure that they will think they are safe using it.

lol..

The microwave isn't actually on. Ours is like this also.

It freaked me out for about 10 seconds, until I grabbed my Kill-A-Watt and verified that it isn't actually on when the door is open.

:p

I also dont understand this whole built into the house/stove thing. Any microwave that I have seen that hangs above the counter/stove just has a regular plug that goes through a hole in the cabinet beside or above and goes into an actual electrical socket.

doesnt have to be radioactive to be harmful.

and for the record. shens.

It's harmful not because it's radiation.. but it's harmful because it contains high levels of energy. If someone beamed 1000W of light radiation at you.. you'd fry just like 1000W of microwave radiation. It has nothing to do with cancer/mutations associated with ionizing radiation such as gamma rays and x-rays.

Is reading comprehension dead? He didn't say its radioactive. To translate what he said " Its still harmful even though its not radioactive"

Nah.. he may not believe it's harmful because of radioactivity, but judging from the comments several posted, it's apparent that many do. And if anything, I never said it wasn't harmful. So Colt45 needs the reading comprehension check. kthnx

The first line was to you, the second line was to the OP.

Great idea for an invention. I wonder how dangerous this would be though.

Wait, so that crappy little door to the microwave protects me from the dangerous radiation inside?

What's it made of? Asbestos?

It only runs when the door is open?

That's kind of dangerous. Long-term exposure to an open microwave oven while it's left running will usually cause you to develop cataracts. In case you don't know what that is, your eyesight will go foggy and eventually you'll go blind. There really aren't any other known effects, except speculation about cancer (mostly unfounded speculation).

Don't run your microwave while the door is open, ever. The door is specially designed so that the microwaves will reflect off of it and remain in the cooking chamber.

Heat is a form of radiation.

edit: What I should have asked was, should I cut the power going into the microwave just in case something else goes wrong with it?

Uh thats a pretty serious defect - arent there 2 or 3 interlocks that prevent that from happening?

Should be, the UL standard for microwave ovens calls for a minimum of two separate interlocks, one of which can not be reached by a part of the human body or other insertable object. In fact, the interlock monitoring circuits should disable the microwave generator from operating if the interlocks fail.

So it's safe using the microwave?

Radioactive isn't just any kind of radiation though. Radioactive materials are isotopes that has very unstable nuclei that releases alpha, beta, or gamma radiation.
Heat isn't neccesarily radiation. It typically comes from conduction or convection. Only objects that generate heat emits radiation.

I just realized, this microwave is broken then. You can't cook anything in it unless it's left open. Imagine not having a microwave oven for a while, that'll suck.

that is why you run to kmart, and buy the $30 microwave...

Well it's built into the wall, don't you need to have an electrician reconnect all the wires to it behind the wall. It's built into the house.

Its gonna be three wires. I rewired all the outlets and switches in three rooms before and I was only like 13 at the time. (just make sure u shut off the breaker for the microwave).

Yeah, I just found out how to get to the wires in the back. You need to unscrew the metal frame holding the microwave in place, then you can unplug it. Is it typical for microwaves to die after around 8 years?

I wouldn't say that - but then consumer product safety is part of my career. :) If you really want to know if microwaves are being generated, you could try the idea someone mentioned above - place a bowl of water in the oven and run it for a minute (don't stand near it as a precaution). If the water heats up, then the generator is working. If you're inclined to spend a bit of money, microwave leakage detection meters can be picked up for $30-$50 (like this one).
However, given how cheap basic microwaves are these days I just don't think it's worth the potential hazard.

I'd normally recommend just doing it yourself. But, seeing that it took help from ATOT for you to realize that your microwave is broken, quite frankly, I think you'd kill yourself attempting to replace the microwave.

There is a seal on the inside of the door that says "do not remove and operate within 60 feet of a pacemaker" or something like that, so yeah I would assume it is a bad idea.

How do you need an electrician for a microwave? It is plugged into the wall and on a bracket, not wired into the house (at least all the ones I have known).

I never saw it put in, but I'm assuming it's running off the same line as the convection over, 220 volts. When I saw that plug it was a little diffrent than the other 110's around the house.

Problem solved, there's nothing wrong with the microwave, the generator isn't running when the door is openned.
