I'm not very up to date on scanner deals, is this a good price? What about shipping one of the units was 14lbs! Do any free shipping coupons exist? Would be HOT with a free ship coupon. Just sold my digi cam and would really appreciate a cheap scanner till I find another digi cam.

Well, don't know of any shipping coupons. Gound is $10 to my place. The X6EL model is selling for $39.95 and it's used at half.com, so I think $18.90 is pretty darn good for a new one.

Thanks. I just worry that driver support for these scanners will not be available for future versions of Windows.

i have an old HP SCSI II scanner, still has full windows support, i don't have an isa slot for the isa card anymore, but newegg had a tekram one for $22..
still good, but with the new scsi adapter, the contrast is really bad, but that can easily be resolved with photoshop..

Almost jumped right on the film/slide scanner for the wife (she's a pro-am photographer), but did some searching around for reviews/opinions, and found that while it was a decent slide scanner, it's lame with negatives. Text.

Still, if you need to scan slides, it appears an excellent value. Original MSRP was over $800.

I bit on the slide scanner...this is really a nice deal, no, make that a scorching hot deal, if you want to archive some old 35mm slides. The slide attachment which come with most scanners are really a joke. To do a decent job, there is no substitute for a dedicated slide scanner. I have several shoeboxes of old slides which I want to digitize then will probably resell this scanner, for a profit.

Regarding scanning negs, good luck, especially with color neg film. Due to the complexities involved in balancing color and contrast, I'm not aware of any consumer level scanner which does an acceptable job.

Cry! I spent over $400 on this exact slide scanner back in 99 or 2000. The image quality is amazing, but it is slow ~1minute per slide. Plan 45min if you want to scan a whole roll.

Thanks for the links :). When I saw slide scanner I immediately thought about archiving my parents old slides.. Now to just find a decent PCI SCSI Card (no ISA slots :) )

You're welcome. I bought that same card a couple of years ago and never had a problem with it. I took it out for something else, which I can't even remember now. Looks like I'll have to use my one and only ISA slot when I get the scanner. I just hope I can get it to work with XP since the card is 16 bit and I don't have any free IRQs. :(

Got my film scanner today. I hooked it up and it works with XP Pro. You'll need the driver from Microtek's website for XP. I haven't had a chance to play with it, but it is slow. For my needs though, it will be just fine. Very hot deal, thanks!

just got my slide scanner yesterday. Looks cool, it came with a color calibration slide. Can't wait to see what it does.
