Microsoft's Whistler anti Piracy feature

Saw this at AMDzone
"Microsoft does not want you to install Whistler on more than 1 computer. In order to complete the install, you must register on-line first, and you must send in certain installion and pc data. Once you do that, the product code that you are sometimes asked to get of the CD Case to Windows booklet and that computer are locked together. IT's an anti-piracy feature Microsoft is using to keep people from copying Whistler to multiple computers."

l'm a new member and this is new to me.but yes l heard that to.the one thing that really bothers me is.what's going to happen when l decide to up grade my pc.or decide to clean everything all out and install everything again.l hope that does not mean l have to buy another whister installation again.

there will be some holes for this feautre, but its microsoft and its their product. AMD, can you post the link to the story please?

What an impossibly lame idea. What about computers that aren't connected to the internet?

What part of the computer are they trying to "lock" the OS to? The hard drive? The current configuration? The CPU? It seems like this would prevent upgrades, and would only work on boxes designed to be like iMacs... never opened, never upgraded.

Teddi's point is a good one; what about when you have to format and reinstall? Since it's a Microsoft product, you know it will happen frequently.

Oh well, the protection should be cracked soon enough. This move is really going to piss a lot of people off.

I've noticed in Win98, if you do not register, you will not be able to use auto device driver update. Are we talking about the same thing here?

WhiteMouse, my understanding is that the operating system (Whistler) will not function at all without registering online.

whitemouse

there's a quick registry fix around that. it's not really about registering.
whistler will be the same as far as the cracking does- done in less than a day.

stupid MS boys!

What a horrible "feature". Cracks or not it shouldn't be there. My first thought was PC's without Internet...ok it was my second thought. The first was how I don't want to do that. 🙂

Lint21, you have the most insightful observation I have seen so far on this topic. What is you have no Internet connection? I have computers that are not connected to the internet, have never been and never will be. Don't even have modems in them. Suppose I want Whistler? I will have to buy modems for these?

If your PC isn't connected to the 'net it sounds like you can call M$ to register. Of course it will be in their timeframe. Can M$ guarantee their customer support services will be available when I call? What about in 5 years? In 10 (hey I might want to play an old Win32 game then). This just isn't convenient to the end-user at all.

ive ran autocad since version 12, ive never seen that feature, however i stopped upgrading after cad2000 so anything after that i dont kno.

do you have a link to back that up jhu?

They have said though that this will not be on the CD's shipped to volume customers such as huge companies and universities. That being said, as soon as it comes out ISO's of the Whistler "Corporate Version" will be available. So just purchase a liscense (no media) and grab the ISO. That's perfectly legal and will keep you from having to register every time you reinstall.

What if I change my hardware config.? Will it say when I install on my new harddrive that it is not my comp? Suppose I change everything, in my comp? Better yet get a new comp.? How will I get it installed if it is locked to the original hardware config.?
