One of our radio stations has been playing a lot of "dangers of counterfeit software" ads that have been made to sound like news reports. They start off with a man who blabs a good amount of FUD, then says "so-and-so has been covering the story" and passes it on to a girl, to continues said FUD. She utters the usual crap about how using counterfeit software causes your computer to get viruses, adware and so on. But then she said something that really pissed me off:
"Downloading, or even searching for counterfeit software will infect your computer" with adware and viruses.
I use genuine Windows XP on two of my three computers (third one has Ubuntu), and all I get in thanks is some stupid Windows Genuine Advantage bloatware sneaked into every update.
If you want more people to buy your crappy software:
1. Make it suck less.
2. Don't charge so much.
I should be studying marketing instead of Computer Engineering. Why make good systems when you can sell lousy ones by lying about them?
