This thing deserves a thread.. Only Im not really sure where to put it.
So i ll put it in here, where the graphics aficionados live.

Microsoft has strongly hinted that the IllumiRoom augmented reality peripheral projector is linked to the next-generation Xbox 720, in much the same way that Project Natal (Kinect) was eventually linked to the Xbox 360. To celebrate, Microsoft has released a new video that showcases the awesome potential of IllumiRoom, and also a ton of details on how IllumiRoom actually works.
For more go to link above.

However you must click this link first:

It is a video of it in action, explaining what it does.

I've been saying PS4 will blow away the next Xbox......
Im gonna take that back after seeing this video.

I had a "mind blown" moment watching this.
What do you guys think?

That's petty cool. Why not skip the tv and just use the projector?

Because the projector isnt used for makeing a big screen on a wall.

Its used for all the effects they can do, that ll enrich the user experiance.
Watch the video and you ll better understand it.

In the console forum probably would be my guess.

It might not be limited to the Xbox.
There could be PC versions of this, I guess.

I did watch before I posted. Still don't understand why projector+TV is better than just a projector. My guess is the projector is too cheap and crappy to actually replace the tv.

Try playing on projector in daily light..... herp derp....
And while you focus on crips plasma display, projector is "trowing" thing at you from your pheriferal vision. That is way better than looking around on the wall for loot and sht. After 20mins of play your neck would hurt 😛

I agree on the lighting. That's my first concern. Why not have the projector put the focus on the main action and simulate a tv with the effects off to the side.

I think its pretty cool. Would not make be buy a 720, but it is cool.

And the resolution of the images being projected are very low, to keep resource utilization low I am sure.

Wow that looks badass. Is that actually being developed by MS? If that comes with the 720 that's a huge seller.

Although probably hard to set up.

a big ass projector isnt going to help the crappy 7790 GPU inside the console. Unless they use it to draw away attention from how much better PS4 will be.

my projector doesn't look bad in light

Some of that looked very annoying. Everything else looked like added distractions of poor quality extended views and obviously for those who play in their living rooms. I'd call it a gimmick similar to that thing that blows air on ya to simulate wind or the Tactile transducer attached to your back but whatever floats your boat.

Very cool would buy.

The effects extended from the screen do not need to be high def. If you want to focus on something your POV will shift to it and the high def result is displayed on the HDTV.

I particularly like the lighting effects, more than I do the specific graphical extension of the gameworld.

In the demo they should have used a bigger screen relative to the rest of the room. With this tech I'd like to have a 60"+ screen from 8ft away.

The part I really like is the bullets that "seem" to fly out of the screen.
Also the projector did a swell job on the granades that seemed again to drop out of the screen and roll around on the carpet.

I think Microsoft is onto something with this projector effects stuff.

For those saying "just use a projector".

Look at the video.
Look at what's in the room.

To use a projector, you need to have the entire surface area be "clean" and flat, and a sensible colour, or use a projection surface.
Most people wouldn't necessarily feel that they want to to redesign their entire room just to have a projector on the wall instead of using a TV.
This works with your room to add to the game, rather than against your room.

Pretty damn neat. Would definitely make me consider a 720 more, although my TV setup is not really ideal for it. Not sure how you'd do something like this with a PC

Surprised at the positive feedback here... I found it extremely annoying
Its one of those things that shows a lot of potential but this implementation is really lacking

Most of the time I found the effect to be too distracting... I think the only thing I liked was the snow

I think it looks awesome as a concept, you'd really have to sit down and try it to determine how it actually works.

Personally I doubt it's overly distracting, it'll just be extra immersion or effects that will be in your peripheral vision.

It would be fun to try it out.

The shadows part of the car driving under bridges was kind of cool.

The rest...not so much.
