Microsoft yanks Vista update for service pack 1 that is causing endless reboots

Thanks for the linkage! 😉

Most said that the update hung as the message "Configuring Updates Step 3 of 3 -- 0% Complete" appeared on the screen. When users rebooted hoping to clear the error, their PCs went into an endless cycle of reboots.

Just as I suspected - ppl getting impatient and rebooting in the middle of the process...

If MS was smart, they would bring back the floating 'drum and drumstick' animation, to give the chimps something to look at! 😀

While Windows HAS evolved, the customers haven't...

If the update screen hangs, what are people supposed to do? I'm usually willing to wait several minutes for an update process to show some sort of progress, but after that I'm going to try and kill the process and/or reboot.

Before you install SP1 it tells you it could take over an hour for the update to install and your computer will reboot several times. It's just people not being patient.

MrChad, microsoft has provided a phone number for those that need support with this http://windowsvistablog.com/bl...equisite-kb937287.aspx

Yes, but (correct me if I'm wrong) the issue here is not with installing SP1 (which is not yet available on Windows Update) but with installing a prerequisite update for SP1.

well actually if you run the cmd file that is listed here you can get service pack 1 from windows update and i believe this is one of the files that was required before you could get it

Right, the problem is in the prereq, not SP1.

Ugh those Microsoft jerks messing things up again.

They shouldn't pull OUT the Windows Update prerequisite to SP1, they should
just make SP1 *and* the prerequisite update(s) available immediately as a standalone ISO image that you can just run from and install 'instantly'.

Thanks to Windows Update and Vista's broken wireless drivers I spent the better part of 18 hours getting SP1 on a system last night when I should've just been able to grab the SP1 standalone ISO image in about 45 minutes.

I really really really hate Microsoft for this cr*p.

 You suspected wrong. The issue is, on certain machines the update *HANGS* once it hangs the only recourse to the user is to reboot the machine. Once they do that they get into the endless loop.

This is *not* an issue of the user not waiting for the update to complete before rebooting, if the update hangs on a system the users are hosed as they are stuck without any other recourse.

LoL!

CHECK THIS OUT

You'll see that I 'Canceled' my SP1 install twice - or so it *seems*.

Actually, I pulled the ethernet cable out of my NIC several times during the install, just to see what would happen - if I could bork Vista... 🙂

A couple of times, this aborted the install and I had to reboot - those are the 'Canceled' attempts that you're seeing!

That's why I'm having a hard time buying into this whole thing.

Then, again, I didn't 'pull the plug' during the 'prerequisites' - maybe I'll try that next... 😀

If you have Technet subscription or know someone who does, you can download the SP1 iso from there.

Im confused on what you think MS is 'selling'. The Sp1 prereq update hung on certain systems, I dont know if MS has identified the underlying issue yet (Stash?). If the prereq didnt hang then you were in the vast majority. However, when your dealing with millions of clients even a .01% failure rate is lots of upset (and stuck) users. The fact that this update installed fine for you means just that, it installed fine for you (as it did for me, and Im willing to bet most of the other users here).

It's NOT MS that I'm having a problem with... 😉

It's the punditry in the electronic media that I'm having a hard time swollowing!

The 'unwashed masses' are finally starting to cozy-up to Vista, but there are STILL a lot of negativity towards Vista in the media - and 'they' take every opportunity to 'slip it to them'.

I've installed/uninstalled SP1, et al, several times. Sure, I've had a couple of minor problems with icons disappearing from the notification area, screen res getting switched, yada, yada, yada - but I think the media hacks are overstating the seriousness of this problem, in an attempt to claim some sort of hallow victory, like "See I told you so! Vista sucks! Stick with XP - a known good!"

And, having installed/uninstalled SP1 several times, I'm here to tell you... that stupid "1 of 3" / "x%" thing doesn't work correctly - and could EASILY confuse ppl into *thinking* Vista is locked up. I've *thought* that several times myself!

Ppl are just getting impatient, I'm sure of it! Bring back 'the animated marching drum/drumsticks'...

This is NOT a minor update, and it takes HOURS to complete, both installing & uninstalling...

Make more sense now? 🙂

The title of this thread is very misleading, and in fact incorrect. MS has not yanked SP1 at all.

The problem some people have had has been with KB937287, which is a prerequisite update to SP1. Not patching it doesn't prevent you from patching to SP1, just from installing it through windows update.

SP1, at least for the 64bit versions, is not only not yanked, it became available on Windows update for Vista64 today.

In fact, the whole issue with KB937287 seems to be a non-issue, at least at this point. MS may have pulled it on or before the 20th, but as of this afternoon it was available through windows update.

Hmm, I guess I dont see it that way, but its ok if we dont agree.

What you seem to be misunderstadning is:

1) Its not SP1 this issue occurs with, its a prior update that needs to be installed first
2) MS has confirmed the update (in some isolated cases) *HANGS*. The fact that the progress is stuck a 0% is a symptom of the hang, not the cause. E.g. users arent getting impatient and rebooting. (In normal usage that progress inidcator is quick, its definately off with Sp1 but again, this isnt SP1 we are discussing)

This is NOT a minor update, and it takes HOURS to complete, both installing & uninstalling...

This is your error, your refering to SP1 where as this issue (again) is NOT SP1. This prereq does not take hours to install.
