What is the difference in the Microsoft works programs? I mean, the word and spreadsheet apps are almost identical. What's the deal?

works = crap
office = full featured crap

office suite has a lot more functions and features in excel, while the works come with full version of word (i believe its the XP-2002 version?), the spreadsheet feature is nowhere close to excel. but should be enough for the regular home user for personal use etc.

To echo what gshock888 said: works is absolutely crap. I think that they did start shipping Word with Works, though... thankfully. Oh, and Works's file types are not anything that another program reads... you can get MS Office, etc., to open them, but not without some difficulty if you've never done it before.

I would never buy or use Works at all. Its only redemption is that it comes with Word.

works should be fine for everyday use. i've heard great things about openoffice but i haven't tried it myself. i'd give that a try since it's free.
