Today, I picked up this week's (10-16 November) sales flyer at one of the Staples in Lancaster, PA.
I see they have Microsoft Works Suite 2003 on sale for $59.94, after a $15 mail-in rebate. Good price for this software suite. Plus, there are always Staples coupons floating around. And the flyer also notes (on the top of page 1) that Staples will send one a $20 gift check by mail, with an in-store product purchase of $150 or more.
Probably the best reason for buying MS Works Suite 2003 is that it includes MS Word. Which, if purchased alone, costs 4 or 5 times as much as the suite. And no, the version of Word in Works Suite 2003 isn't crippled or scaled way back or anything like that.
Yes, you're free to maintain that Microsoft is evil. Yes, I'm sure that illegal copies of MS Word are available without much difficulty, via various file sharing systems. But when all is said and done, if you want a legal copy of what is the standard word processor in many places, and your school or employer isn't going to provide you with a free or nearly free copy, this isn't a bad deal.
Oh, and Works Suite 2003 also includes a fairly decent spreadsheet and database (but they're no Excel and Access), Money, Encarta, Picture It, and MS Streets and Trips. So while the big selling point has got to be MS Word, the rest of the software isn't necessarily completely worthless, either.
