In MS Word, is there a way to indicate that a full section of text should be ignored in a spell check? How do you do this? Or rather, if it's already doing this, how do you make it NOT do it? My boss is getting frustrated because documents he sends out to us have glaring spelling errors, and the spell check doesn't catch them. He says it tells him there are sections of the doc that are marked to not be spell checked.

That is confusing. You can always designate a highlighted area to check. And, you can add specific words to an "Ignore" list. But - the problem is basically with users not knowing the English language very well. Spell checkers are often wrong because they see the correct spelling of the wrong word.

Here's an example from a newspaper article. "The supervisor decided that a tighter reign was needed to control the situation."

OK - the spell checker would bless that sentence - but it is wrong! The word "reign" is the wrong word. We are not talking about the realm of a ruler - but the need to impose more control - i.e., a tighter REIN (the expression comes from controlling a horse!)

Since the mid-60s, our schools have been producing a product with less knowledge of their language, especially in the technical fields. We have many brilliant but somewhat illiterate engineers. :)

You can customize a particular style on a document to not check for spelling errors. Modify a style and select the Language option.
