As long as you avoid certain activities (ever putting in a picture or table, trying to do any sort of nonstandard formatting whatsoever, saving in any format but .doc, ever taking its grammar suggestions, or always taking its spelling suggestions), it works fine.

Maybe if you didnt' wait until a few hours before your 40 page paper is due to actually write the paper, you wouldn't have this problem.

My complaint with Word isn't that it "screws up my documents". My complaint is that it takes so many workarounds and tricks and turning off of features to get my documents looking like I want, and then when I save and reopen, or if I try to save in a different format, it often changes in appearance.

One thing I REALLY like about Word is the auto-replace where common mistypes, which could be nothing but mistypes, are corrected (teh -> the). This really improves my typing speed.

But every other autocorrect option, the grammar checker, the auto-paragraph formatting, the auto-numbering/bulleting, the save as web page, and the image handling system all SUCK. Especially the images (you can usually turn off the other stuff). Why do very slight mouse movements make the image fly all over the place, possibly disappearing? Why can't you just anchor an image where you want it, maybe nudging it a bit to get it right, and have the TEXT move to accomodate?

BWAHAHAH the irony...the picture problem you are having is because you do not know how to use word....you can get the text to accomodate

I don't hate Microsoft because of it's software. I hate Microsoft for what it has done, what it stands for, and what it is neglecting to do. It's software may be intuitive, but it comes at a price. And I'm not talking just $ here.

It sounds like the OP needs to take a class or 20 on how to use word processing software.

Word is absolutely incredible, and the way it handles my 30+ page technical reports is like silk, I wouldn't trade it for any other piece of software. If you know how to use Word properly and to it's full extent (very few people do, although they may claim to), it's an incredibly powerful program, and personally don't think there's anything that's on par with it.

If I had a time machine and could take the latest Word with me back 3 years, I bet it would be as intuitive as Wordperfect.

if Monopoly's didn't exist I could stil use Wordperfect, and have a GUS MAX or Areal Vortex Sound Card in my system.

Thankfully everyone mainly wrote papers with these retro tools called pencils and paper back when I was in school.
