microsoft word bug or godly compress method on jpegs?

so i am playing around with some pictures that adds up to 10 meg in jpeg format,

first i drag and drop each one from my windows desktop to the word document. each picture comes out small so i resize then to make them look bigger. so anyways after i finish editing the doc, i save it comes out to around 10 meg.

i use the compress pictures option, it doesn't do anything. still 10 megs.

now my friend does the exact same pictures, and send me the word doc, only 2 megs. the pictures are just as clear. and i can even drag the picture to my active desktop and bam the pictures saved turns into the original file size (example pic was 40kb)

now i am confused as hell, how does word fit 10 meg worth of jpeg into 2 meg doc file? i can only think by compression. but 1. jpeg don't compress well (i thought) 2. i did use the compression option on word on my file and it can't compress anything. (it looks like it did its thing with no error msgs or anything, but the file size stays the same)

3. am i totally wrong about jpeg being compressable? and that word is buggy and not compressing when i am doing it, but works for my friend?

ok just found jpeg is very compressable. but then what the hell is this "bug" cuz we are using the exact same word 2002, sp3. and i find no such bug on the web. and i tried to duplicate the exact same method my friend did on my pc, it just doesn't work. i am gonna try it on hers later.
