Microsoft WMV 9 Gets Nod for HD-DVD
The DVD Forum has approved the popular Microsoft Windows Media Video (WMV) 9 format as a mandatory technology for any device seeking the high-definition DVD (HD-DVD) logo. In other words, to use the logo, next-generation DVD players and other DVD-playback devices must support WMV. This move is a huge coup d'etat for Microsoft, which is trying to get its video and audio formats accepted as industry standards, and for consumers, who'll be able to purchase more advanced DVD movies in the future as a result.

Provisional approval of MPEG2, WM9 (VC-9) and MPEG4 AVC(H.264) Video CODECs as mandatory for the HD DVD Video specification for playback devices, subject to (a) an update in 60 days regarding licensing terms and conditions, (b) a presentation by each of the respective licensing bodies at the next SC meeting and (c) possible elimination of any of the above CODECs at the next SC meeting.

Perhaps, if you are a Microsoft fanboi, but please explain why this is a benefit to the consumer (as opposed to some other codec/standard).

99% of consumers couldn't give a sh!t what codec was used as long as they had a cheap unit that played high quality films.

With WMV9 , we can still use the current lasers that tons of companies are already setup to manufactur for (no need to buy new systems for blue-ray) which will keep costs down, plus the format will be easily accessible to a majority of peoples computers.

MPEG 4 is fine with me plus MPEG 2 for regular DVD's. WMP 9 really offers nothing that MPEG 4 doesn't already have.

Given the above, Ameesh, can you explain what *advantages* WMP 9 has over mpeg4? Why would I want it?

I'm not trying to flame, I just want to be educated on this.

Same here. Seems like the players just need to be WMV compatible, nothing about the content having to be in WMV.

With the DVD Forum's provisional approval, Microsoft codecs cleared the technology bar, winning a vote for best picture quality from 19 other companies on the group's steering committee, according to Majidimehr. Members of the DVD Forum steering committee include Disney, Warner, Sony and Panasonic.
As a condition to Microsoft before it could establish VC-9 as a standard, it had to strip VC-9 of proprietary status, Majidimehr said. The company satisfied that condition when it submitted the underlying video compression technology to SMPTE last year and opened up its software to developers for the first time. Now developers can download the technical spec, build on it and not be beholden to Microsoft

I think it's awesome as well!

Bah, it's from Microsoft and that means it can't be good. Just one more step up the ladder for the evil empire. ;) :p

WMV is sweet. It is far better than MPEG 4 in many ways, but no one wants to use it simply because it's microsoft. If WMV were released by some peon hacker about 1/5 years ago (like Microsoft did), it would be the standard for encoding right now among the general population.

Well... if they removed all proprietary status from the codec I have no problem at all w/ it becoming a standard. These files can be compressed well, stream well and keep HD well. This will make it so I don't have to convert many of my videos to VCD(mpg) to play on a stand alone dvd player. I like this.

WM9 is only one of the supported formats for HD-DVD, not exclusive, which gives the software producers alot of lattitude.

To the end-user it should be transparent. Do you really care what codec your movie uses, as long as it looks and sounds good?

So you can create and play WMV files in Linux and other OS's now (supported by MS, not a hack)?
