I broke down and bought a Wireless access point and Laptop NIC so I can cruise the apartment wireless. Already did as much as I could to make it secure, so you drive byers can just keep on drivin (got my in car setup to do some war drivin myself, just for fun).

I have a Compaq Presario 1200-111XL and the above mentioned Microsoft PCMCIA Wireless NIC. Install was beautiful for both the router and the NIC. I am very impressed. Most of the review sites claimed only price as a con toward MS. CC had then for the same price as the Linksys, Netgear and Siemens. ($129 for the router and $79 for the card).

The problem: Major feedback from the NIC on my laptop speakers. Volume control has nothing to do with it. It is directly to the speakers. Anyone else have this problem? I guess I could package it up and exchnage for another. I have a Orinco Gold coming in the mail for the car setup. I could just use that and return this one. (I wonder if the MS Utility will work with other cards?

2.4Ghz is way outside of the human audio range, so you know it's not the transmitter, could be a problem with a filter capacitor off of the timing chip internal to the pc card/wap, whatever it has to resonate at an audible frequency (about 15hz-25khz top and bottom varies depending on how old, or deaf you are) for their to be distortion in any speaker, have you tried shielded speakers? does it create any distortions in crt monitors? you can test on your tv if you only have lcd panels for your computers, if so then the distortion has to be somewhere near the 60hz frequncy for you to visually percieve it. I've seen this problem between ac power converters too near crt monitors before, but never with wireless equipment, they only output a max. of 100mW, not even enough power to feel if you where to be shocked by it.

Good luck.
