You should be fine. I'm personally holding off for a while because there are no drivers for my HDTV tuner. :p

(Well, that and I still need to buy an Athlon 64 :p)

I would wait. I have not seen a single review that motivates me to make a change. Most say wait - in fact - wait until Longhorn is released. Do a Google for XP Pro 64 bit Review. This is but one of many.

You can get a free 180-day trial from Microsoft right here if you want to test-drive it first. I'm using it at home right now. I don't have a printer, scanner, or any other interesting peripherals here, but I do have some at work, and my computers sometimes flip-flop from home to work, so I decided to pick up a standard 32-bit WinXP Pro for now (due to the comprehensive driver support of 32-bit).

Drivers would be your main problem. Anyhow, if you own the 32bit XP Pro, you can upgrade it to the 64bit version for free.

Well I think you would be ok, the problem is many of the drivers even though they work, still have quite a few bugs left to work out. I think the other thing you need to look at is the performance gains you will get.....which basically are none as of right now.

64bit apps do show performance increases. But the problem is average users like us don't have a lot of 64bit software to benefit from

Exactly!! that's what my point was...right now there isn't enough 64bit apps out there to really bother with XP 64bit edition

There's no performance increase with XP 64-bit. You'd be better off getting XP Pro now, so you can trade it in for XP 64-bit when better drivers and 64-bit programs are released.

Yeah i was thinking about getting WinXP Pro 64Bit but the drivers are the thing holding me back... With little to no performance boost, and so little amount of 64 Bit Apps right now, sticking with 32 bit Windows is the only logical thing because, if you are happy with 32bit now, then the buggy drivers will make the switch bad.

There is a 64bit FarCry though ;)!

The main problem with Windows 64-bit is drivers. Many drivers still aren't mature, and many aren't available. Some manufacturers (Canon) have even admitted that they don't plan to issue any 64bit drivers for the forseable future.

The only reason to wait is if there is something of real important that you can do with WinXP and can not do with Winx64.

Otherwise all the other Considerations are kind of ?Old Slogans? at best.

In addition as mechBgon posted there is a free 180days trial.

Install a Mobile rack in your computer ($12) get a second tray ($8) and get somewhere a 20GB (or what ever you have or can effort).

Doing so you can try Win x64 for 180 days and still use your WinXP.

For less then $40 you can be the one that gives the answers rather than reading "Old Slogans".

here's a warning

Windows XP64 is a non standard OS, Canon says
Now think very carefully if you wanna upgrade

By INQUIRER staff: Thursday 16 June 2005, 21:19
A MAJOR MANUFACTURER of what we IT trade types call "peripherals" has described the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows as not being a standard operating system.

An INQ reader wisely asked whether Canon could supply the beautiful in theory 64-bitness to his small i350 printer, but technical support at the Japanese firm gave him a reply which may serve as a warning to others if they want to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows which is currently available.

Said Canon technical support to our reader: "We are not producing drivers for this OS at present as Canon have deemed XP 64 as a non standard OS designed for professional high end use.

"It will only be the top of our range designed for applications of an advanced business nature that will initially be supported on the 64 bit platform. However, Canon will monitor the take up of the new OS and respond accordingly, if necessary."

The techie concluded: "We would urge everyone upgrading to a 64 bit OS to investigate the compatibility of existing peripherals designed for 32-bit operating systems."

We would suggest that if a company as mighty as Canon is saying this, it would be very very wise to check on drivers before you make any steps you might later regret. Ask Intel and AMD tech support what they think. They are likely to give you cogent answers. And while you're at it, ask Microsoft. And HP. And everyone else.

It's a Damn Shame that so many top tier manufacters aren't producing 64 bit drivers, x64 is the best Operating System Microsoft has ever produced. It's really to bad people are waiting for Longhorn.

Microsoft should release Longhorn as a 64 bit only Operating System so that companies are forced to produce 64 bit drivers otherwise companies will be lazy and cheap.
