This product is an upgrade (packaged DVD) to Windows 8 Pro for your PC running Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP SP3 (Check system requirements to ensure your PC can be upgraded to Windows 8).

If you have win 7 Pro installed (OEM most have) you have to reinstall apps.

For those wondering..

How do you use the in-store code, just tell it to them? Also, does Staples have them in stock yet, according to the website the stores I checked say "coming soon."

Edit: Here is the in-store coupon.

Thanks, Just got one via the online coupon code. I wanted a DVD in case what just happened to my system disk happens again.

I'll pick it up at a local store. A few minutes after placing the order I received a confirming email stating that my copy will be delivered by UPS to the store, expected to be there the 30th.

Still faster than the Amazon deal and I don't have to mess with a gift card.

I pretty sure the version you bought for $39.99 is not the FULL version ... Your thread title is misleading.

The full versions are only available as OEM (system builder PUL). They go for $99.99 and $139.99 for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro respectively.

If I have a valid license for XP & am doing a new system build, can I install XP, then for $40, upgrade to Win 8, then downgrade to Win 7 (if I don't like 8?)

Only the OEM version of Win 8 Pro has downgrade rights, and you can downgrade to either Win 7 Pro, or Vista Business, but not any of the other editions. So the $40 upgrade won't allow you to downgrade.

You'd have to buy Windows 7 separately. But if you are coming from Vista or XP, you will almost certainly be satisfied with Windows 8. For the most part, the only people complaining about 8 are people with 7 who don't like Metro.

I have a laptop with Windows 7, and two computers with Windows 8 (preview), and to me it's the same experience in essence...just have the metro interface that I then need to click to the desktop if I want to go there.

Have you noticed the speed difference with 8 over 7 though?

8 seems much faster and snappier by far than when i had 7 on the same machine.
