Hi,

I was wondering what this more standard optical mouse is like compared to the Intellimouse optical?

Thanks

none of those 2 are good for gaming, especially quake type games, when you move fast, the mouse goes all over the place, it cna't read really fast movement

If you're gonna do FPS, I strongly recommend going with a top class ball mouse instead.

Go with the Razer boomslang 1k. That version should do the job for you. But i have the 2k dpi version and i can't see myself going back to regular mice. The drivers, the dpi encoding are the best on the market by far.

I can't understand why everyone recommends against the optical mice. I use one for my gaming and I play everything.. UT, Q3A, Deus Ex... It works fine.

As long as you set the mouse speed fast enough, you'll never have a problem with moving the mouse to fast or having it track when you lift it up (you won't need to). If the mouse speed is set too slow, you'll need fast movements to turn around fast in the game. If its set faster, a small slow movement will make you turn fast. it doesn't take much to get used to, really.

i use the intellimouse optical. i love the extra buttons.

Ugh...I can recommend the opticals, but I'd rather have a Logitech Optical Mouseman Wheel then my Explorer...
As for the Boomslang, put a hand on one first. I finally got to paw it at Best Buy, and they suck! They're way too wide, nd the buttons go down with the slightest touch

I like my Logitech Mouseman Wheel. Have yet to try an optical, but I'd probably go with another Logitech..

I have a logitech mouseman wheel and i love this thing esp. the thumb button. I have used both the optical mouses by logitech and intellimouse. I would prefer the explorer over the logitech but the explorer my friends has already broke after i bought it for him for christmas. It broke quite some times ago. I know like 4 guys that recently bought the logitech, but their durability has yet to be tested as they have only had them for like a month. But the only thing that is keeping me from snatching up the logitech is that it doesn't have any extra buttons and it is pretty bad for games. Using the laser mouse it felt kind of "slow" and when i moved really fast to turn around, i would try to turn left and i would go right. Both mice have this problem.

Mine works perfectly. I can not make it mis-track no matter how fast I shake it. In my experience, the ONLY thing that makes the mouse mis track is the surface. Unfortunately, a LOT of surfaces are not so good. I use a RatPadZ and NO ONE has ever been able to make it mis track. I use an Intellimouse Optical for FPS games, and I love it! I sent my RazorBoomslang mouse back.

with an optical mouse, surface is not important!!! As long as the surface is flat, it will be all the same. The only time a mousepad makes a difference is with ball mouses where they need to grip the mousepad well. An optical mouse will work on a wall for all it's worth

Why do you think this?

Although it does not grip the surface, certain patterns LOOK different to the mouse and work better. I had trouble with my mouse acting funney, especially if I was "twitch" shooting like in a rail gun match. I tried MANY different surfaces like the bare desk top, white paper, regular mouse pads, 3M Mouse pads, Everglide mouse pads, magazine covers, book covers, note books, and all of them in combination with an additional sheet of clear plastic. MOST of these combinations exibited wierd cursor movement if the mouse was moved really fast. That is why I am convinced you have to find the right surface. For me, an ALL BLACK RatPadZ
worked the best.

The surface does matter. Right now my Intellimouse Optical works perfect on my desk (laminate), with absolutely no problems.

I took the same mouse over to my parents house to show them, (because they don't like mouse pads). And it worked horribly. It would skip, or stop moving if you moved the mouse fast. Their desk surface is made of wood. As soon as I used the mouse on the mouse pad it worked perfect again.

I gather you've never tried using it on a reflective surface before. My Explorer jumps and skips on my Star Wars 3D mouse pad. Works fine a normal fabric mouse pad and even on my wooden desktop.

Thanks a lot for the response. After reading these repsonses and varios reviews around the Net I think I'll go with the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. I can't even consider Logitech anyway because the place I'm getting it from doesn't stock them.

Thanks

I've tried the Microsoft optical mouse and you have to pick it WAY up off the table to get it to stop tracking. That would suck for gaming.

I have one of the Logitech opticals here on the kids computer and it's much better. You have to pick it up more than a ball but not much more. I've played UT with it and it works fine. Being optical and USB it's got good precision for sniping. :)

I use the Microsoft Intellieye Optical and have no problems at all in fast gaming, and I play a lot of Team Fortress. No problems at all coming up the spirals from the water in 2Fort even when confronting enemies. I use Logitech drivers from their website.
