"Anyone can freely download the toolset, available in beta form on August 30 and full form by the end of the year. The toolset comes in two flavors: the entry-level XNA Game Studio Express and the advanced XNA Game Studio Professional. Developing games using Express and releasing them on the PC will be free, but those who want their games available for download on the Xbox 360 must pay $99 a year as part of Microsoft's Creators Club."

probably better to release on the PC and actually make some money.

how do you charge users for your game over XBOX? AFAIK there's no built in purchasing options right?

Amm , Zugzwang 152 lol

Microsoft XBOX live has XBOX live marketplace where you can buy XBOX live arcade , download game demo , get game trailer , get mod for your current xbox games , free themes and alot of other content.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty2/news.html?sid=6155241 , Call of duty 2 made $1million profit selling Map pack on XBOX live

In 6month of xbox 360 launch , 24million downloads were made on xbox live marketplace http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty2/news.html?sid=6151492

Games like Gemotery War sold over 200,000 and current fastest selling game is currently street figher 2.

You would have a more chance making money on xbox live Marketplace then selling the arcade type game on a online website for pc.

Here is a Video XBOX live Marketplace :

Ok this just killed PS3 development kit as it costs you your first born son and three of your limbs.

This is great move from MS. It's quite rare thing from what I know of them. Could possibly be part of their new initiative to bring more gaming support on Windows ?

The Ars article says the $99 version just lets you share your game for free, to be on the marketplace you need a professional version of the kit at a price to be named later.

This is still good news for anyone who's interested in game development, though we'll have to see whether .Net / c# game tools will work for more than Flash-like casual games.

Yeah :( but i think Microsoft will soon start giving out free XBOX 360 mini development kit with XNA express to school , UNI and other education learning place. Should be good to see how Microsoft does excute these plans.

You?ll be able to get the first one when you download the (windows only) beta of the tools in September.

Free demo game included. Hack away.

Running unsigned code on your Xbox 360 will require a yearly subscription of $99.00.

orly.gif "Unsigned code" eh? That's pretty broad. I somehow doubt it'll run anything you throw at it. Sounds like it'll be a "compile every time" thing, from below:

When we ship XNA Game Studio Express this fall, you will be able to share your final product with anyone on your windows machine that you want, but there is no support for sharing Xbox binaries other than sending your source around.

Because they're not letting the 360 code-signing algorithm out of the building, lest there be Chinese silvers of 360 games running around for pennies on the dollar.

------------- me:
So to share your game, the other people must have the XNA kit too, and must compile and download your game to their xbox.

The mechwarrior 2 shared source is available at fileshack. The microsoft link does not work anymore.
