Microsoft turning Apple's elitism against itself

Makes sense now I just point the commercials instead of trying to do the math for people that don't "get it"

only time I'd buy a mac is if I lived in California looking over my cliff in my backyard.

I'd be wearing twill beach khakis and my dress shirt would be unbuttoned. I look behind me to see that the wife is reading a book in the warm glow of our humble home. I look forward to see the ocean sipping my wine. When I'm done I get back on my Mac and click once or twice then close the thing because I have no computer intellect.

Rinse, wash, repeat.

man that could be me.

/turns on the Intel Macbook for the first time this year.

"The ad makes an obvious point: Macs cost more than Windows PCs. But there's a far more damaging subtext: that people who buy Macs aren't necessarily cool, clued-in hipsters. In fact, they might just be poseurs who paid too much for a computer?slash?fashion accessory. The deeper subtext is that these days, wasting money doesn't make you hip and smart?it makes you stupid."

Agree with this. Not all (probably not even most) Mac users use them for the superficial reasons, though. There are valid reasons for using Macs over Windows PCs.
I personally don't find Macs to be worth the money, but you won't hear me getting all whiny about people who do.

Microsoft's ads are downright retarded. I think they are worse than the snarky "I'm a Mac" ads Apple has put out.

Are you kidding, those MAC commercials were horrible..at least these are poking fun and MS is in the fight instead of letting it happen!

I saw a windows ad last night that said "Windows for a world without walls" or something similar. My first thought was "In a world without walls, who needs windows!"

Paying three grand for a novelty item is retarded, honestly do you people like depriving yourself of the freedom to do whatever you like? or is it the trend?

I think Microsoft's other ad campaign is far superior. There's something about the original I'm a PC ads and the newer ones with the kids.

Yeah... poor John Hodgeman... he's getting pwned by 4 year olds 🙂

I'm not sure of the effectiveness of the new ads. I think MS would be more effective if they more directly portrayed the sheer silliness of many Apple fans.

What do you mean depriving myself?

I have disposable income.
They have a product like at a price I can afford.
It is unix.

Seems like I get everything I want, all the features I want, and at a price I can afford.

I get everything I love about linux, all the software I like to use on a day to day basis, a UI I enjoy, a great programing environment with a consistent api for free, and unlike my linux notebook everything works out of the box. (Which means I save time, and my time is worth a lot to me.)

So overall I can't see how I'm depriving myself of freedom.

Yep, I was going to recommend linux but I like Windows better- I've been using it since 1989 so I'm used to it, but it's all about choice and freedom, I remember Bill Gates once said 'why be in the business of making something that's free?'- there is a philosophical issue tied to it but still I agree with him.

Agree. Switched from Leopard to Vista last January. Couldn't be happier. Everything is faster and more stable. I honestly don't know how Mac users manage to convince themselves that their computers don't crash... perhaps it's a coping mechanism to rationalize their spending hundreds or thousands more for the same hardware.

However, I also agree with Crono:

Some people don't have high enough hardware requirements for it to matter at all. Others are just set in their ways and would be much worse off without a Mac. My mom does her work on her Mac and if she switched to Windows, she might save a couple hundred bucks at first, but she'd lose far more than that in worse productivity since she'd have to get used to Windows.

This is true. However, Windows 7 is quite an improvement over Vista. Once 7 comes out I think it'll be huge. Should really hurt Mac sales.

I think Microsoft would have gotten more attention if they did the same style of ads that Apple does (minus the horrible false information...actually, destroying that false info). They'd have to start with something like the following:

Mac: "Hi! I'm a Mac!"
PC: "And we're both PCs".
Mac: "Damn."

End.
