Microsoft Trackball cutting out!!!

My brother has a computer that did not originally have a USB port installed. I installed one of the PCI/USB cards into his computer. If we plug his MS mouse into the new USB port, it detects it. If we use it for awhile, it dies. The mouse freezes and if we are lucky, we can use keyboard commmand to reboot the system. Everything is back to normal after that and we are back where we started from. Anyone have this problem or know of a way to fis this?

His system is:
AMD k6-2 450
Shuttle mobo
64 MB Ram
creative labs modem
Video and sound: can't remember.
