The reason is because MS didn't want to lose market share to say, all of China (govt., but we know how that goes), who was looking at buying only linux because it's... dum-dum-da... free. Other less developed countries were in similar positions. They could build PCs for say $150 on hardware, but couldn't justify another $100 on the OS when Linux was free. So they introduced a pared down version of XP for less $. Honestly I don't think anyone who uses a PC much would like it because of the restrictions. I know I would never want to install it.

Nope, I don't understand the world if MS is giving pirates discounts on the OS but I have to pay full price just because I'm staying legit.

Its called XP-Lite. Its hilarious though,

Third world, first world, has nothing to do with it. It's a simple risk vs. reward equation.. You see, online theft or ASIAN street sales @$1 a CD there's just no credible threat to serve as a deterance. In real stores that's a lot different easy to get caught and punished.
