Does this mean we can expect to see more and more desktops powered by AMD? I hope so, because then I might not have to build my own anymore...

I didn't say it was surprising news, but it sparked a question in my head, so I asked everyone what they thought about it.

I think the issue concerning OEM's is as always pricepoint and what intel might do to them if they decide to rollout AMD based systems.MS might fully support AMD'S Hammer but it's still very much a Wintel world, imho anyway :)

Well the Hammer are the first chips that claim they can run in many different environments, and if so, it would take a lot of developement costs off of the developing for high-end servers, down to home desktops. Sounds like a solid plan to me.

You make good points, business though,at least in my direct experience wants intel based solutions, due to their proven stability and compatability, it's going to take more than full MS support for one line of CPU to get OEM's to dare to risk incurring the wrath of intel imho.

Is it even possible to make software not compatible with a chip? There was a Cyrix, AMD and Intel (that I know about) a few years back. Now there is just AMD and Intel that is popular. If MS made their software incompatible with AMDs, wouldn't they lose a lot of customers? I think they would.

Its not about compatibility, its about optimizing a chip for a certain working environment. Microsoft has claimed that they have "optimized" Windows to work best under the Intel platform. We all know that these claims are very minimal, if true at all, and are used just to sway uninformed customers. Now that the consumer has heard that Microsoft has said that the Hammer is worthy, maybe more OEM's will be adding AMD to there lineup for a wider customer base, no?

the key here is that MS will support the 64 bit Hammer.

as far as i know, until this announcement there was no guarantee that there would be an OS other than Linux that would run the Hammer at 64 bit. That MS will support the 64 bit Hammer is VERY good news for Hammer and AMD fans. without MS support the Hammer would have been just another 32 bit CPU.

I think this is great. Maybe we can get the customers to buy computers based on performance now instead of marketing.

I have to say it. Pics?
