Translated from German to English:

Microsoft announces Windows XP for hammer probably shortly Probably Microsoft will already announce at the end this week officially to want to support AMDs x86-64-Architektur to bring out thus also a 64bit-Windows-XP-Version for the hammer processors. That anyhow can be inferred to the words of the Microsoft chief architect David Cutler, which wanted to acknowledge nor disclaim an inquiry of heise on-line because of a circulating internal Mail over 64-Bit-Windows XP and AMD hammer neither, it however much-saying with " You wants know the to who by the ends to OF the week " answered. After SuSE Linux thereby Windows XP would be the second important 64-Bit-Betriebssystem, which will accompany the launching of a vessel of the processor expected in the autumn. A possible date for the announcement would be Thursday, which 25 April, on which AMD wants to hold the annual " Shareholder meeting " in New York. On this day AMD boss Jerry of sanders goes as CEO into the retirement and passes the marshal marschall-Stab on at Hector Ruiz. Bill Gates and Co could give a beautiful parting gift so to the AMD joint founder also on the way (as/c't)

As is known, this Thursday Jerry Sanders is retiring from CEO of AMD, letting Hector Ruiz become CEO of the company. As is implied above, Jerry just might announce on the same day that Microsoft is supporting ClawHammer with an x86-64 compatible Windows XP-64 operating system. Well, we'll know soon enough...

UPDATE: Perhaps MS will announce support for x86-64 a day early.

UPDATE 2: As if you didn't have enough proof already...

It seems that AMD's Hammer is going to get major OS support from Microsoft. As you know, the bandwidth available and the memory space can increase with each Hammer CPU. In other words, the Hammer makes use of NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access). You might remember what we found out about Hammer at Cebit:

"Mark, however, assured us that while memory banks are connected to different CPUs, the OS still sees a unified memory space. CPU A can get data from memory bank B, and vice versa, courtesy of the HyperTransport controllers and the operating system. In other words, the operating system must have special SMP drivers to get a dual hammer system working. AMD assured us that drivers will of course be present at the launch of SledgeHammer. "

Coïncidence or not, CNet reports that

"Microsoft is building a high-end feature into Windows for speeding up data access in multiprocessor servers--a feature that to date has been available only in high-end Unix servers, the company said Tuesday.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software company is working on support for a technology called non-uniform memory access, or NUMA, one method for designing large servers crammed with processors, said Sean McGrane, program manager for Microsoft's top-end Datacenter server."

Add to that Yahoo reports that AMD is going to make a major "Hammer announcement":

"On April 24, AMD will announce two significant developments related to its next-generation family of processors, code-named "Hammer.'' Please join Dirk Meyer, group vice president of AMD's Computation Products Group, and other AMD executives during a teleconference tomorrow, as AMD marches toward the future of 64-bit computing. "

That is not all, C't asked David Cutler (Microsoft) about the famous e-mail that Mike Magee published and David answered that this Thursday we "would know more about Windows 64 bit - x86." Well, we are not entirely surprised, as even at CEBIT, AMD's Mark de Frere en Jan Gütter gave the impression to be very confident about Microsoft's support of Hammer.

You really have to ask yourself why MS wouldn?t support the claw hammer. That?s a whole new money making market which I?m sure they would want to dominate. It wouldn?t be like MS to come up with 64bit support when they feel the need to. Their way to ambitious/greedy to come in late with a 64bit OS.
