Microsoft, stepping up its war against online fraud, filed 117 lawsuits Thursday against operators of ``phishing'' sites that try to trick unsuspecting Internet users into handing over personal financial information.

The perpetrators cost Americans millions of dollars a year, experts say, by posing as their banks or other companies that ask them for passwords, credit card and Social Security numbers or other information.

I think its good but I don't think I understand what the actual specific legal complaint is by microsoft that allows themselves to be a plaintiff in such cases persue these scams in court.

I agree, although I'm interested in their legal argument for being the plantiff in this situation too.

Microsoft can go for it. How? They could nail them using the DMCA since many of the phishing exploits take advantage undocumented "features" (buffer overflows) of IExplorer and Windows.

Oh noes... not the DMCA! ;) Quick, someone counter with a Slashdot-esque kneejerk reaction against the DMCA before I think it is worthwhile.

That's what I was thinking. Unless they are "phishing" in MS's name (such as a Hotmail/MSN spoof), then I don't see where they have any sort of legal standing in such a matter. It's a matter for LEO, not MS. Then again, MS uses and abuses the US legal system to do as they please, and sometimes use lawsuits as weapons of harassment, so that's par for the course for them, I guess.

Wouldn't that make them an accessory to the defendant, instead?

Who is Microsoft harassing in this case? Sometimes, friend, you need to chill the fuck out with your conspiracy theory crap.

And you need to stop posting using "censored words", because when I reply to those posts, the board's software eats my reply, which is rather frustrating. Oh well, I'm not going to reply any further, in protest of this buggy software. (Yes, I did have a real reply prepared, but it was eaten.)
