Microsoft: Sony's 1080p Support on PS3 is all Hype

1080p is so overrated. In fact, HDTV is not the "necessity" everyone makes it out to be.

I used to work at walmart, and people would allways come up and say that they have analog cable and want HDTV for DVD movies. bah.

Yeah, but they basically took the PS2 GTA4 and increased the resolution. That's it. From the E3 reports, nothing else was added to the game and some said it looked kind of weird.

koha 1080p isnt overatted its just not as advanced as 720 is. most tvs are capable of displaying 1080p/60 but all the media that is 1080p is usually set at 30 fps; whereas, all the content for 720p is set at 60 fps. so once media content on 1080 starts to be shown at 60 fps thats when 1080p will really shine.

most tvs can't do 1080p. i don't know where you're getting that from

720p is fine enough for me. look at XBOX 360 Dead Rising or NBA Live 06, i can't read the damn text on my 45" Sharp Aquos.

yeah you get more pixels on screen but they aren't increasing the font size! that is dumb.
I think 720p is really good enough, can a normal person see that much of a difference sitting 8-10ft away from the screen looking at a 45" LCD wheter if its 720 or 1080?

I haven't heard about the PC but it is coming to the 360. It's from Ubisoft so you know they'll put it on everything capable of playing a videogame.

You talking Gran Turismo?

I saw a trailer that looked fantastic, and they would put more than a handful of cars in a race (something the GT series has always been missing is really crowded races.

so, the ps3 version GTA4 will still have paper-thin blurry spectators? if so, sony's machine is proving to be a real nice next gen machine

Yep, that was one of the complaints. GTA HD is just a port of GTA4.

They need to add more and different types of gameplay to the GT games. Sure GT4 had more cars and better graphics but the same "race, win money, fix car, race, win money and buy new car" gameplay is getting old and boring. I actually bought a ps2 just for gt4 but played it for an hour and never touched it again.

Wait a sec, all the comments in the article are made by a microsoft guy and it's all just speculation. I won't put too much weight in that.

I bet there will be at least 1080i games for the PS3 in the first year if for no other reason than the fill rate for 1080i and 720p are the same so it wouldn't take any more processing power to support 1080i if a game already support 720p. Also - since the games will probably all support ntsc, pal, 720p, and probably widescreen versions of the aforementioned resolutions - I think they will have enough flexibility in the rendering engine to support 1080i. 1080p is another matter since it actually requires 2x the fill rate of 720p so maybe we won't see 1080p so soon. Then again, if someone makes a really graphics unintensive games like Tetris, that could easily be 1080p without pushing the hardware.
