Microsoft Software Assurance

My understanding of software assurance is that it allows you free software upgrades over the term of the license. How long is the term?

Some of the Office and Windows license options I have been looking at allow you to spend a little more (~$50-75 sometimes) to get a software assurance version of it. Whats the point?

That likely applies to a Volume License. All Office and Windows I have seen, especially if Retail, will allow you software updates
within the Same release. It will not allow you say to update from say 2003 to 2007 releasses

Microsoft has been offering Software Assurance on its desktop and server products for several years. The features change, but the idea is that if there's a new version of your software during your SA contract term, you get free upgrades. You pay for a Software Assurance contract that lasts a specified number of years (usually three years). There are also things like "Cold Server Backup" rights, eLearning discounts, time payment plans, free home usage (MS Office) and other benefits.

Microsoft devised the program as a way to spread out its software product revenue and not make it so dependent on an upgrade cycle. Customers benefit from the time payment plan, but "expect" upgrades during their subscription term.
