I generally think people smart enough to break into servers are pretty intelligent - at least when the targets are high-profile

I doubt it's a technical script kiddie. If it were that simple, it would have been done before and more-wide spread. All I can assume is that they exploited some major vulnerability (XSS?) and got access to the FTP server.
