HI All

I just upgraded to windows xp professional. I started getting these pop ups that says microsoft security bulletin. These bulletins suggest going to www.windows-patch.info for a download. Is this legit?? I just downloaded the software and patch not more than a few days ago.

thanks

disabling windows messenger does not solve the problem.

The problem is that you are not running a firewall and your computer is directly acessable from the internet

turn on the firewall, that's what it's there for.

I disagree. I might have a firewall that lets listening apps listen, if I approve them. Maybe I accidentally allowed an app. Maybe I deliberately allowed an app. The point is, Windows Messenger is the problem, not the lack of a firewall. Having a firewall is still good of course, but in this case, the culprit is windows messenger ;).

If you have a firewall and you've accidentally allowed connections to windows messenger than you have a misconfigured firewall. While I understand the point you are trying to make it isnt going to help him or any of the other users out there who dont understand what they are doing and are not running a firewall because of it.

sterling visit http://www.microsoft.com/protect for instructions on how to solve this and other problems you will encounter if you are not properly firewalled.

Actually that is not quite correct either. When you say Winodws Messenger most people will think you are talking
about MSN Messenger, the Instant Messaging client bundled with the OS.

But that is not what supports the pop up windows. Those are coming thru the Windows Messaging Service
which is a different function of the OS altogether.

Here's some links to help disable the Messaging Service

And sterling, the only legit site for windows updates for the average user is currently at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com , and any future sites will most likely be connected to the microsoft.com
domain in a similar fashion.

www.windows-patch.info? Isn't even close to sounding like a real microsoft site, any script kiddie
can set up a URL like that, and probably did to find easy systems to attack, or at least find gullible people to
target for SPAM.

The funny thing about that phony www.windows-patch.info site is that they excluded Win ME from the list of OS's that need the "patch".

When even spammers and scammers dis the OS, you know it's bad ;)
