Microsoft Registry Checker Nightmare

I have been having some serious problem with Windows98se Microsoft Registry Checker ever since I built my computer, it's been nearly 3 months now and Im about to actually go buy an axe and break the crap out of my machine in matter of any days from now. This crap registry checker appears about 90% of the time after I turn off the computer and turn it back on. This is the only case. It does not happen if I reboot or keep the computer running and the performance is super when it's running. If I turn that thing off, im history.. Everything disappears, all my updated drivers for HD, Sound card, video, etc.. Sometimes wipe out everyting except the empty "shell" of my operating system. Ok,.. Here are my TWO DIRECT questions:

Question Number One: What is the cause or causes for Microsoft Registry Checker to POP UP and SCREW everyting up instead of really fixing it.

Question Number Two: How the HELL do I get rid of this Registry Checker safely in order for this computer to be able to start "normally" without loosing any data what so ever?

If any pro's can answer one of these or all two questions, I will thank you so hard I will personally send you a thank you email and send you something. Thank you.

My system spec:

- PIII 800EB
- Abit BE 6-2 Mobo(crap board)
- Nothing is overclocked, neither my processor or mobo and with standard voltages.
- Seagate Baracudda HD with v.1.22 Highpoint HPT366 UDMA66 driver.
- SB Live Value with the Liveware 3.0 latest driver.
- One PC100 64MB and One PC100 128MB RAM and current system running at underclocked, 600mhz (6x 100).

I think your best bet is to reinstall Windows. Something is seriously hosed. The only times I've seen the Checker pop-up is 1) when I overclocked too far and corrupted the registry - it restored it and all was well (at least I thought so at the time but that's another story)....and 2) when I deleted system.dat, system.da0, user.dat and user.da0 from DOS just to see what would happen. :)

The actual Checker file is C:\WINDOWS\SCANREGW.EXE. I supposed if you nuke this file the Checker won't ever pop-up. Again, I recommend reinstalling Windows instead.

Good luck!

Yes, I agree JellyBaby, at least re-install Windows if not do a complete format. There is never an easy way to fix these problems, don't waste your time. Just do a format and reinstall and save yourself the trouble.

Before you reinstall try this (never tried it but it may work):

delete c:\windows\command\scanreg.exe
copy c:\windows\command\more.exe to c:\windows\command\scanreg.exe

:)

Thanks very much for helping. I will work on this what ya recommended and see what happens.. :p Oh and I forgot to note that I already have done wipe-out HD(partitioning, formatting) and installed windows many many times.. about 46- 50 times in less than 3 months and I knew something is really going on. lol I will let ya know the result if I'll succeed. thanks.

there is a scanreg ini file right above the .exe, open the ini and you will see it tells you how to disable it without having to delete it.

I did exactly as what Jelly baby and wizkid said last night and did a couple of test runs to see it how it goes.. I didn't see any trouble :Q I came home from work today and checked my computer turning it on.. and I saw the result!! No CRAP registry checker appeared and therefore it did not delete all my records and drivers I installed in this PC from last night! :D :D :D I'll do as what spoon said too, I'll saved your note. Thanks very very much all (Jelly baby, BCYL, Wizkid, and Spoon) It is highly likely that it wont repeat the same problem now on after I deleted those two files(scanreg and scanregw). Thanks again!

Are you powering off the PC without closing down Windows? If you do that then Windows will complain the next time you power on the PC.

To close down Windows do Start | Shut Down then choose Shut Down in the dialog box and click OK.

You can turn the registry checker off, actually.
go to start menu - run - type "regedit.exe"
After that in the registry go to:
My Computer/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/run

delete the "Scan Registry" key and remove:
C:\WINDOWS\scanregw.exe /autorun

I hope That'll help
