In an email sent to vendors at the CES 2006, Microsoft for the first time outlined some system requirements for its upcoming operating system. These guidelines are a first indication of how much horsepower Windows Vista will require to be able to deliver on Microsoft's promises.

The email states that Vista asks for a system with a 3.0 GHz Intel or equivalent AMD processor and 1 GB of memory. We believe that especially ATI officials may have liked the recommendation to firms who are demonstrating Vista at their booths to use a "high end ATI GPU," namely a Radeon 9800, x600, x700, x800 or x850 device. According to Microsoft, ATI is preferred to Nvidia at this time due to superior driver support."

Other requirements included a SATA or 7200 rpm EIDE hard drive. For Vista on notebooks, Microsoft recommended the Acer Ferrari 3400, the Acer Ferrari 4000, the HP Pavillion zd8230, the IBM Thinkpad T43 and the Toshiba Tecra M4.

The email stated that "PCs that meet or exceed these specifications will provide the most responsive Windows Vista operating system demo experience."

nV is behind ATI on supporting an unreleased OS, that is all it says. And why isn't the X1xxx series included? Could it have something to do with SM3?

Just as I didnt think it was a big deal that NV had drivers for XP x64 before ATi, I dont think this is a big deal. There is zero chance that NV wont have full support by the time Vista ships.

no way . . .

clearly M$ believes ATi has superior driver support ;)

:Q

. . . . just like the x600/9800p is a "high end ATI GPU". . .

Mark, dont be dissin' on the 9800 pro. I sleep with mine under the pillow. I have very fond memories of the r350 and r360 core. Btw, I have been seeing lately that you have an x850 or something right? Finally moved on from the 9800 XT?

i  my old 9800 pro, if only powercolor could have built me one that worked for more than a few months without overheating i'd still have it...

i made it within a minute. :p

and yes, i got a $200 x850xt that does PE speeds . . . only cause i "broke" my 9800xt . . . i'd STILL have it if it were running

but you get my point [i hope]

the x600-9800p are NOT "high-end" ATi cards [by any stretch of the imagination]

ah yes the good ol 9800pro,...when trilinear filtering was 100% full blown trilinear that looked good,..played everything great and you could tell they took no shortcuts making that card from the moment you first fired up your favorite game,...great card,..great memories,..and thats when the tech demos were actually wicked looking,...i still have the gargoyle chrome clock demo stuck in my head,....

What's with those insane system requirements? XP is already pretty stable, Vista should be faster, not slower. Vista should also be less harddrive dependent than XP was, but the 7200RPM recommendation probably means it will be more so.

Has nothing to do with ATI drivers Otis.

1. nVidia sued MS over XBox
2. nVidia gets royalties on every XBox currently sold, for backwards compatibility
3. MS dumped nVidia from the XBox 360 project when they learned nVidia was designing the new chip for the market leader, Playstation

Probably just a little dig from MS over past difficulties. I somehow doubt 9600Pros will demonstrate Vistas capabilities more than 7800GTXs, but I'm known to have some preference for nVidia parts. ;)

It could be we should all be preparing for Vista by returning to our 9800Pros so we can see "Vistas powers"!

QFT. I doubt that it is really anything about their drivers, i think this is just one of the perks you get for partnering with MS. I think everyone in this thread is seeing right through this marketing.

Just to make it clear right now, i think both companies have EXCELLENT driver support nowadays with a slight edge to Nvidia for their superior Linux and x64 drivers (But then again they still have those blocky shadow problems in Far Cry and BF2 so :( )

WTF?
3.0ghz to run a operating system? WIn XP runs damn fie at 1ghz, what does vista add except pretty interface?
7200rpm? you telling me 90% of laptops will not run vista smoothly? does vista really need 50-60MBps sustained hdd read to function?

that's really high system requirements. For the love of god, It requires more power than most new games(HL2, Farcry, SC:CT, COD2, FEAR) need for smooth gameplay.

I think Microsoft dumped nvidia after nvidia sued them and locked them into high priced XGPUs. Nvidia then shrugged it off and went to Sony.

Nvidia supposedly did not designe the G71 for the Playstation. The PS3 was originally going to have 3 cell chips for everything.

Heh- I finally checked into that the first time the other day and could not believe how trivial it was in Far Cry.

I took some screenshots of the guys shadow when he's talking on the phone at the beginning. I took some screens of light grates. At this point I'm thinking "WTF?"

So I look in that thread, see it's the shadows of foilage on the gun, and that you really mainly notice mostly when you are standing still in the jungle, as the shadows are constantly shifting as you move.

Then I thought about the huge thread and all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over this and just started to laugh.

Yep, it's a problem all right, not one I'll base future card decisions on though.

I think that this is simply MS saying in public to Nvidia to hurry up with their Vista support. I dont think this has anything to do with Xbox......Unless ATI are signed on for the next Xbox already.

ATI's 9800 cards are the "power house" GPU's, nVidia's 7800GTX is now out of date! Um....I can't be the only one to see through this M$ and ATI bullsh!t!

Nope, it's true PC Surgeon.

9800Pros will be $700 now, and 512 GTXs will be $100.. Supply and demand will set the price, and people wanting to be ready for Vista will be sporting R3XX cards.

Shady Days was real, and the "chickens have come home to roost".

Curse my SLI rigs and their primitive ways!
