Microsoft = pwn3d!!!1

... to the tune of 500 million dollars!

Some people are never satisfied. For years, the enemies of Microsoft Corp. have been praying that somebody, anybody, would finally pin the giant software company to the canvas. And now it's happened, at the hands of a tiny, hitherto unknown outfit in Wheaton, Ill. Yet hardly anyone is celebrating. You'd think the entire software industry, with a single voice, would sing hosannas to Mike Doyle, founder of Eolas Technologies Inc. In a federal court in Chicago last month, a jury ordered Microsoft to pay Eolas more than half a billion dollars in damages.

Talk about David slaying Goliath! :Q

it's a lot of money, but I don't think MS is "pinned" to the canvas by any means

I think what the author is trying to say is that it's good to see a little guy finally beat up on a mega-corporation that has a bottomless pit full of lawyers.

Microsoft isn't exactly going to go belly up because of this. 😉

No what the author is saying is, no one is celebrating because this company now has legal precedent to extort, and/or sue anyone that had made a web browser over the years, and that includes all you open source freaks too.

After reading the article, I have to side with Microsoft on this one. The guy pattented something that was pre-existing. If this stands up, I'm going to patent the act of inserting a CD into a CD-ROM drive and make billions!

I agree. If you read the article, you find that he patented something that existed and under the current judgement would be able to sue many, many more people. Also, the judge made a ridiculous ruling for the penalty. $1.46 for 300 lines of code per copy of Windows? That's a little extreme to say the least, I'm with MS on this one.

I'm sorry but half a billion isn't pocket change for anyone!

I got a settlement letter in the mail today and it said the settlement with Microsoft was in tune of 1.1 Billion dollars.

we all know what happens to jurors that vote against MS... <maniacal>lol</maniacal>

I'd like to see that guy get a dime after all the appeals and such that he is gonna be put through.

If it does go through:

But other software products, including competing browsers like Opera and the new Safari browser from Apple Computer Inc., could also be in violation of the patent. Safari, by the way, is based on free browsing software created by the open-source programming community, and sure enough, these open-source products may also fall afoul of the Eolas patent.

Microsoft will be the only company around that can afford to pay out sums like that. So if it is real and valid and holds up to appeals then all you open source hippies are fubar'd so in the end who has the last laugh 😀
