I recently upgraded from Office 2003 to 2010 (to keep pace with our corporate software). Looks like Office 2010 will also have a long, long run on my PC!

Troll title as well is with the article a troll title. Ars used to be better than that.

Has original licensing model firmly in place still: ignored
Adds new, additional licensing model (that admittedly is boneheadedly priced): Oh no, they're making me subscribe!

Not interested. I have copies of Office XP, Office 2003 Pro and Office 2007 Ultimate all with legit license keys. No need to get the latest, not so greatest version, from greedy Microsoft.

I didn't make this up, nor is this the end for their long term goal (the Title is theirs).

They've got this, Office 365, their Cloud services and who knows what else.

Just because you can't comprehend their ultimate Corporate greed/desires doesn't make my post a Troll

This isn't the end, but it is a significant step . . . keep watching and learn instead bringing out the Troll hammer whenever you don't see what's happening.

The addition of more options does not equate to forcing anyone to choose those options.

The removal of options does. The first does not imply the second, and it is just your personal bias driving your assent with the premise of the article. You assume that because the second option has been added, the first will go away. Until such an occurance happens, you're just blindly speculating, as is the ars article.

Most people could. Honestly it doesn't get much better for a software company than having customers on a subscription.

The deal itself isn't that bad at all though. 5 licenses, Skype minutes, storage for a little over $8. That's a Netflix sub, or a meal at McDonalds.

Office 2003 is the only MS office I can stand to use. Now that I'm on Linux I use Libre office and it works fine. Only thing I miss is Excel formulas which Libre office does not seem to support yet, but normally if I find myself wanting a spreadsheet that calculates stuff it's a good indication I should be coding that in php and make it a web app that stores the data in mysql. I have a spreadsheet I use to keep track of my backups/retention but it's time I move that to a custom web based app instead.

Depends on how much you want the latest/greatest. They're making the subscription deal a bit sweeter to get people hooked. Get 'em started, and inertia will keep the subscriptions coming. If you don't want/need the newest Office every time it comes out, the subscription model is much more expensive.
