Microsoft proposes piracy amnesty for XP

Microsoft will be offering anyone who's "unsure" about whether they've got dodgy software the chance to have it checked out by Microsoft, with the promise that if it does turn out to be counterfeit, they'll replace it.
.....
The deal only covers Windows XP, and only five copies per person can be swapped. It's all free, besides the initial postage and packing. The offer only applies to pre-installed home or professional Windows XP bought before Nov. 1. [/i]

note: deals with preinstalled OEM fakes

I wonder if they would send me a realy copy if I just burn a cd and write a serial number on it and mail it in?

Uh, yeah! Try it.. and then write back to us how it went. (I wonder if they have internet access in prison?)

I think it's quite obvious that they are targeting the distributor, and not the user.

Microsoft is smarter than the MPAA.

"We can . . . overlook this little trangression. Just tell us who your dealer is."

Sound familiar?

Though, you can bet that they'll take your name, address, IP name, urine, blood and stool.

" the practice of causing someone to do something they would not usually do by tricking them:" cops call it "Entrapment" and Billy calls it "amnesty" ?? Funny guy.

How is it entrapment? It's for pre-installed OS for a rig you bought. If "you" are the builder that you are going to claim as the OEM that shipped "your" rig with a bogus copy of the OS, thats not entrapment...thats idiotic:thumbsup:

Maybe I'm naive, but I've never heard of an OEM using selling a pirated version of Windows. I assume these are mom & pop type stores gone bad?

Yep.

And there are a LOT of them out there.

Best weapon is simply to stop using their software. It's easy, lots of people do it everyday.

This isn't targetted toward the person who pirates, it's targetted at the person who receives pirated software by accident. Lke if you bought a computer off of Ebay or something and you didn't get a cd key or got a burnt disk or whatever. Basicly people who got ripped off when they bought a computer that came with a illegal copy of the software that was bundled with it.

Basicly it's not a scam or anything, it's just Microsoft using clever marketing to determine the amount of software that gets distributed that is misrepresented as being legal or whatever. Then maybe the can bust a couple people that are selling misrepresented software, or just use the numbers in future marketting/legal things. Something like:
"Thru our amensty program we determined that as much a 1 in 7 copies of Windows sold are stolen and we need to enact legislation against this sort of damaging piracy thru P2P networks" or some such crap.

It's not worth their time to go after individuals at this point (maybe small resellers though), and the definition of "amnesty" is that they let you off the hook completely if you go thru certain steps. It's no skin off of MS's nose to hand out a few free cd codes. It's not like it costs them anything.

me suspect that this poster is an employee of MS and is on commission to spam all the boards he can find.

I had this exact thing happen to me. A couple of years ago, I helped a friend configure and order a PC from a local shop. After installation, we tried to activate Win/XP pro, and got the dreaded "YOU MUST CALL BIG BROTHER TO ACTIVATE THIS COPY OF WINDOWS". MS was actually very good about it, they simply wanted to know what shop we had purchased the PC from and then they sent us a new CD.
