Microsoft poking fun at GMAIL with GMAIL MAN

the thing is, i think the ads are automatic based on certain ad keywords in your emails. it's not like there's someone snooping through your shit.

not a big deal whatsoever, imo. not a breach of privacy.
 
I'd rather have a targeted text ad than the half page sized animated Flash ads that some of the other free e-mail services give you!
 
I can't watch it, that little girl is just too terrible at acting. Probably the daughter of someone at Microsoft.

I see. I have HTML as my mail option and there are no ads.

Though as much as people say they read people's emails, I have trouble believing it. That's seriously a LOT of mail, and I really don't see any value in them doing it.

TBH I could see MS doing it more than anyone, for the sake of anti piracy bull crap.
 
I'm sticking with gmail and ignoring the MS fear mongering. I like free and don't put anything in an email I would fret too much over going public.
 
It's not just a play on Gmail and Mailman, but also a play on G-Man, for those who don't get it. G-Men are often said to be observing and controlling your daily life.

Still, the "joke" wasn't worth playing out like this and especially so when no one at Gmail actually knows what was in your email.

Google makes their money on selling ad space. You really don't see why they would use the content of your emails to more accurately target you for certain ads?
 
Haha, cute.

That nails a small aspect of the privacy issue pretty well, but it's only a very tiny part. Try surfing with google servers and scripts completely blocked and you'll find it can often be a pia for so many sights. They are a far more robust and sophisticated data collection enterprise.

This video is eventually going to come back and bite MS in the @ss since they try to profit off collecting data as well, and I would presume some of their TOS for things like hotmail etc. have subscribers consenting to very similar practices.
