Can the files that hold the information for the various mailboxes, i.e. inbox, sentbox, outbox, etc., etc., be stored on a server/LAN driver as opposed to being stored on the local workstations hard drive ? Or is it manditory that these files be stored on the local C_drive ?

Would this cause any problems other than not being able to access them, if a LAN connection could not be made from workstation to the LAN ?

Thanks.

Assuming you're talking about the .PST file...yes, you can move it to a network share. The first time you open Outlook, it should prompt you for the location of the .PST after it's been moved...just navigate to the shared drive and relink it.
I've done this many times for small companies that can't afford Exchange but want their internet email backed up every night.

yuck psts over the LAN :(

If your goal is to completely get the data off the client machines you could use a mail server that is capable of storing it w/out copying it to the clients (i.e. exchange). If you dont care about having a copy on the client machines you can setup outlook to not delete the messages off the server until you've deleted them locally.

Good luck

What we want to accomplish is a backup of the e-mail for some of our users who want to keep all of their mail (new & old) and not completely delete ANY of it out of their Outlook programs. They want to keep all old mails so they can refer back to them. We were asking about putting the files on the server, so that if the users hard drive was to crash, they would not loose all of their e-mail records. We do use Exchange server but only at the WAN/headquarters level of our firm and not at the local offices. Does this change the reply, that suggested we could move the pst files to the LAN/server and then relink to them there ?

Thanks.
