I think it's a good antipiracy measure for Adobe and Microsoft to have a required activation process in terms of verifying a valid key and such. My only complaint with Microsoft's products is that there is no way to deactivate a piece of software. After you get to the 3 installs or whatever the limit is, you have to call Microsoft and explain the situation to them. What benefit, other than the annoyance of customers, does Microsoft get from not having a deactivation process? /short rant end.
