Microsoft Office 2010 Free Beta!

yeah i just installed off hand cannot see much of a difference. I wont be buying it thats for sure lol.

Lol, well at least it's not going backwards like XP > Vista. I'm sure there's some useful features tucked in there somewhere.

Going totally on a blind limb here, but I'd guess that further changes to Ms Office (post 2k7) are going to focus on collaboration / cloud access / integration aspects.

I have just installed Office 2010 and for me it looks like a huge improvement over Office 2003 which is the latest version I have been using. It also seems to be very much more responsive.

I tried it, seems quite fast, at least as fast as 07 but maybe faster. Overall in my brief look at it, it seems pretty similar to 07 though. At work i will upgrade but at home i may not barring some killer feature that i need.

Did anyone uninstall any previous versions (07) before installing the beta, as per the recommendation in the installation instructions? If not, does it seem to be encountering any issues that may pertain to that?

...just wondering

since i was going from 32 to 64bit versions i had to uninstall, but i've never really had any issues doing an office upgrade, so i wouldn't worry about it too much.

Did they include a classic theme that makes it look / feel like Office 2003?

not that I have seen

any why would you want to?

I'm using it on an XP machine, and it makes XP look BAD.

and they are so not going to get rid of the ribbon interface for better or worse

Installed it last night and briefly looked at excel and word before going to sleep. Thing I noticed right away is they did away with the office orb from 07 and replaced it with a fixed "File" tab. Looks sleeker overall. I'm curious what changes they made to excel, since going from excel 03 to excel 07 was such an overhaul in terms of usability and data handling.

Why change what works simply because it might "look" better? Thousands of people out there know and use the menu system, and it works perfectly fine.

IMHO it's inexcusable that Microsoft didn't at least provide the OPTION for people to enable the old menu. I've had to field many calls from pissed-off people that wasted time trying to find functions in the new ribbon...

I couldn't see myself going back to the antiquated file menu system in the 2003 version. I like the way I can customize my own tool bar with everything I use right there in front of me, no stinky menus to open. Don't even have to use the ribbon.

I was more reffering to the look than the ribbon. office 10 makes win classic look like dogcrap side by side....

I would love my old menus back.

but why would they? they switched it so it better stay switched as I had to relearn everything already.

probably the biggest thing you will hate about 2010 is that outlook went ribbon. in 07 its still 03 style menus

bump, just saw this.
They seem to have incorporated the ribbon across the entire office suite. I'm getting used to Outlook
