Microsoft offers $50 MIR for Elite purchase

Apparently buckling under the pressure of having a direct price comparison with the new PS3 Slim, MS is now offering a $50 MIR to Elite buyers. That will help but what's the point if the console will break in 6 months?

Didn't Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite just drop to $299, like, three weeks ago? Yes, yes it did. Evidently that cut just wasn't deep enough for Microsoft (or else it had a change of heart following the release of Sony's $299 PS3 Slim), as the Redmond mega-corp has today lit up a new mail-in rebate program to bring the cost down to $249. Consoles purchased between today (sorry, Monday shoppers!) and October 5th are eligible, and it's anyone's guess as to what'll happen to the 360 lineup come October 6th. So, is Santa coming early for anyone this year, or what?

Their high-end console is now only $50 more than their base model. Perhaps they did not see the same type of movement that SONY saw when it introduced the slim.

As for me purchasing an XBOX 360, I'm not a big fan of FPS. However, we are just hitting the one year anniversary of the "Jasper" units being available. If their reliability are on par with the other consoles and if there is a compelling reason to get one, there's no reason why I wouldn't.

Just to show they're still Microsoft, ArsTechnica has learned that the new wireless-N adapter is still going to be priced at $100. They are being kind and dropping the old adapter to just $80 while stock lasts.

This sucks, I just bought my Elite a few days after the price drop and the rebate is not valid for any purchase made before Sept 22nd. Well at least it wasn't $100 like the iPhone fiasco.

Of course it isn't selling as well as the PS3 right now. What would make you think it should? PS3 had a redesign and a 100 dollar price drop.

Xbox had a price drop of 1 model to the same price as an older model

You could buy a 360 for the 199 already. You couldn't touch a PS3 for less than 399 unless you did some sony card or dell deal.

I find it funny how some of you are so surprised at something so obvious.

A limited-time offer (two-week) $50 rebate is not a price drop. There are rumors of a holiday bundle and further speculation that this is to clear out the vanilla elite boxes. The Elite is still $299.99.

The Jasper units have proven to be pretty reliable to this point (the E74 error is far less common than the RROD), and the system has a full year warranty anyway (3 years for RROD).

It is temporal. But I'm willing to bet that they are doing this to see if it'll spur sales. I guess we'll see in two weeks if it was successful.
