Microsoft Money free trial

I'm wondering if someone with Vista would do me a favor and see if you can download, install and launch Microsoft Money from the following link.

http://www.microsoft.com/money...etrial_essentials.mspx

I've tried downloading and installing several times over several days and get the same results every time. The software won't launch. I get a dialog box saying that "Microsoft Money has stopped working".

I don't know if the download is hosed, or what.

No signup necessary. It's time limited. No email required or anything.

I was able to download, install and launch it on Vista 32bit.

Quite unusual that it won't do it's thing in 64bit.

Where does one go from here? Microsoft is a huge company. Whom does one contact? I have an OEM version of Vista on a computer I built so I guess the support falls on my shoulders.

Did you run it as an admin?

# or PCs with Windows Vista😛entium 1 gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) processor or 1-GHz 64-bit (x64) processor or faster (or compatible)
# 1 GB of RAM
# Support for DirectX® 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory

It looks like it should run it w/o any problems.

I'm admin.

I tried changing permissions and all kinds of settings after the install and it just won't go. I'm going to install in compatibility mode right now and see what happens.

Look at this screenie. It's a right click, Properties on the executable.

I thought that hitting the Unblock button at the bottom would take care of it. Nope.

It's a M'soft app on Vista and it should work in my opinion. If I can't get it to work, then Quicken it is. Microsoft's loss.

I'll be back in a minute.

Choosing Run as administrator is a no-go. Then I checked Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP before installing and that doesn't work either.

I called Microsoft, got referred to a help site for MM. There are 3 options available for support and with all of them one must pay. For a trial app of theirs that won't install on their OS? Don't think so.

These might help if I was smarter.

Be grateful that it doesn't work. Even when it does work it's just terrible software.

So is Quicken.

Use GnuCash. It's free. It's still incomplete and a little cobby in places. But at least you don't pay for lousy software and lousier customer service. And it is improving noticeably with each new release.

BTW, I am not an MS basher. MS produces a huge variety of software, much of which I truly enjoy using. But I hate the people who develop Money with the heat of a thousand fiery suns stuffed up Beelzebub's hind end. I used that crapware for years (paying ransom for my data every two years) and finally had enough. The folks who came up with that user interface (and any kids they already have) should be neutered to prevent the bad genes from being passed forward.

I hated Quicken before I hated Money. And I still hate it.

Until I saw GnuCash I hadn't seen any personal finance software since Dollars and $ense on the Apple //e that I could stand.

Edit: Wow, I didn't really mean to rant, but I was actually foaming at the mouth! Must take my medication now.

And, if you do decide to buy MSMoney, for pity's sake do not buy the downloadable version. of the software. Buy it on disc. Going through the ridiculous procedure to reinstall Money with the very peculiar way they handle the installation keys (in an attempt to extort more money from you so you can re-download instead of just reinstalling from your own local copy) is really more than some can stomach.

You might want to check out the newsgroup, too.
