microsoft Media Center 2005?

Ok i got my system set up for maybe 2 months. Its has the following hardware:
antec case with a 350 antec power supply
amd64 2800+ (not overcocked)
chaintek vnf3-250 (nforce3)
1 GB DDR Ram
geforce4 mx
hauppage pvr150
benq 1620 dvd burner.

I can say up to this point ive been pretty unhappy with the system. Ive had it lock up multiple times and the only software i have installed on it is mce2005 with all patches and avg antivirus and nvidia dvd decorder.

Here are my gripes
1) Ive messed around with telling it when to record/stop recording and it always seems to screw this up. It will begin recording 2 min after the program begins sometimes and will like quit 1 minute before it is done. I have found the best setting is to tell it to start recording exactly when the program begins and to stop exactly when it ends. I still have programs that wont start/stop at the right time. Yes i am sure the clock is correct. It even syncs to the internet every so often.

2) I have had multiple cases where it has locked up. Once i even was fast forwarding a show and it locked up.

3) Once in awhile the cursor on the dvd menu will disappear and i have to restart it to see the cursors.

4) Originally i thought i could save my movies to the file server on the network and it appears it won't let me do it unless its a local drive

5) I have shows that i record that i will get studders like the system was struggeling. Come on with the hardware i have why would i ever get that? Its pretty heafty hardware for a HTPC i think.

At first i was very excited. I would have a hub for my entertainment that i could do everything on but its been nothing but a pain. At first i was going to build a linux/myth box but it just requires to much time that i don't want to spend. Im someowhat linux competitent but it still takes awhile to get everything working prefectly with mythpc.

Right now im frustrated and thinking about just trashing the system and turning it into a linux box that i can play with. I want to see what everyone things and see if anyone has the same opinion.

On a side note i had TIVO before. TIVO ALWAYS recorded ON TIME and ALWAYS stoped exactly when the show stopped. It could do duel streams on its low hardware perfectly with no hicups and i was just trying to do 1 stream with my box i set up.

Take this for what it's worth, but I had TONS of problems with MCE05 when I used a GF4MX. I upgraded to a DX9-level vidcard (FX5200) and they all went away. My HTPC got real happy when I swapped in a 9700Pro, though.

You can get an FX5200 for as little as $50.

Hmm. I can't see how maybe it would improve on the hesitation eventhough it shouldn't. It should only depend on the hauppage pvr150. I can't imagine it will help with it recording shows at the correct time though.

Well i just upgraded my video card in my main pc (6600 gt) to a 7800 GT and ill see if that helps but i don't think its going to make a difference at all but im willing to give it a try i guess.

Don't know about recording at the correct time, but just about all of the other problems you listed are most likely related to your underpowered video card. MCE has very strict hardware requirements, which is the main reason it is available as an OEM (no support) only.

hey ncage, don't forget to let us know if it helped to throw a DX9 vidcard in there. I'm thinking it will 🙂
