Microsoft makes mistakes...

As specified here.

Microsoft has also managed to upset women and entire countries. A Spanish-language version of Windows XP, destined for Latin American markets, asked users to select their gender between "not specified," "male" or "bitch," because of an unfortunate error in translation.

Someone's been reading slashdot lately? 🙂

It's funny, but these countries are being so whiney.

I disagree. If you want to do business with another country, you want to respect the law, culture and religion in the said country. So some country banned the sales of microsoft operating systems because it pisses them off somehow, it's their freedom to do so. Along the same line it is Microsoft's freedom to not do anything about it if they think they're right and can afford to lose the market in that country. No body is pointing a gun at their heads. 🙂

Linux anyone? 🙂

The point is, though, that MS is changing their products to please these countries, because they know linux is a very real alternative, especially in these countries where free means a lot. 🙂 This decision is just the same as any other business decision made by any other company.

I can understand the spanish translation mix up, that is fairly direct.

When coloring in 800,000 pixels on a map of India, Microsoft colored eight of them a different shade of green to represent the disputed Kashmiri territory. The difference in greens meant Kashmir was shown as non-Indian, and the product was promptly banned in India. Microsoft was left to recall all 200,000 copies of the offending Windows 95 operating system software to try and heal the diplomatic wounds. "It cost millions," Edwards said.

Diplomatic wounds? Because they colored a still disputed piece of land a different color? Thats like China being pissed off that taiwan is a different color than China. Ridiculous is what it is.

Another social blunder from Microsoft saw chanting of the Koran used as a soundtrack for a computer game and led to great offence to the Saudi Arabia government. The company later issued a new version of the game without the chanting, while keeping the previous editions in circulation because U.S. staff thought the slip wouldn't be spotted, but the Saudi government banned the game and demanded an apology. Microsoft then withdrew the game.

Oh gee, the saudi govt is pissed off that we offended their anal culture.
I'm sure that if microsoft released a game where women weren't covered from head to toe, it would be reason to go to war!
