Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller?

A friend of mine was to annoyed by update prompts and she installed SP2. Since then her Skype 2.0 has been having issues with cutting out and loosing connections and uninstalling. Her system may also may be running slow with some other problems she cannot identify.

I can't find any errors so I am trying to uninstall SP2 and during the pre uninstall it said that a new device "Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller" might not work properly if I uninstall SP2.

I don't see Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller or anything like it in the device manager like in the MS knowledge base.

Can I somehow remove Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Canceller or whatever else may be causing these problems without removing SP2, or is SP2 the problem and needs to be removed.

Also is anybody using Skype with SP2 and has or had these kind of problems?

Thanks

That is just the warning from the MS installer, it detects what programs have been installed since the last service pack and warns they may not work properly if it is removed. It does not mean it won't work, it really means the installer doesn't know.

THe AEC is for (from what I recall) dealing with echo issues on usb audio devices like cameras and microphones (like hearing your own voice with MS messenger audio conferencing).

Do you have the latest skype installed, know lots of people using it with SP2, so I suspect something else is up (since the other symptoms you mentioned all seem weird too)

Thanks, I tried the latest Skype install and it did not help. This was the change that came up during the install.

I tried finding it but I could not so I continued with the install.

Without XP2 it works normally again.

Since this was listed as a change, I think that may be causing the problem. I don't think she will try SP2 any time soon but I would still like to know what could have caused the problems.

I myself am using Skype with SP2 without problems. She has SoundMax digital audio on her laptop which I recently updated and it would cause the system to freeze with Skype or other conferencing software. The latest drivers said they fixed that issue. Maybe there needs to be a new fix for her system.
