$179 for a 120 GB hard drive, what is this, 2002?

120GB 2.5" HDDs (ie laptop drives - what the 360 uses) retail for around $80-$120. This is in line when you consider the MS markup on what is essentially a specialized detachable drive.

I really like what Sony did with their hard drive. There's no reason the drive shouldn't be user replaceable. Of course that's just one more disincentive to buy the 60 GB PS3. Whoops.

 Sony
 Microsoft
Who the hell knows what Nintendo is going to do with regard to hard drives. :D

MS is worried about security. Especially since they are trying to entice studios into offering downloads. I've heard stories about content providers being upset with Sony about how hackable the PS3 turned out to be.

When my Xbox 360 gets back from the Repair Center (red ring of death), I'm seriously thinking about getting a 20GB PS3 plus throwing in an $80 120GB hard drive.

I don't really care about integrated wireless as I've already got the Logitech Playlink for wireless duties.

Break your 360 console take it back to the stores when they only have X-Box 360 elite's and pay the store the difference and there is a awesome upgrade plan ;-) haha Of course you would have to have the warranty still valid.

This annoys me, even though I don't have a tv with HDMI, I wish Microsoft offered a upgrade program with this.

I would be scared to spend $480 on a console that has problems with heat and ring of death... ugh. MS should have improved its cooling features with this opportunity. Throw us a bone MS, wtf, black paint and larger hard drive for that kind of price premium? PS3 doesn't look so bad now.

It's not quieter, it doesn't have WiFi, it uses an unknown HDMI revision (hopefully 1.3), and $80 more expensive. MS had better have some price drops ready to go, because I can't see what they could possibly be thinking by raising the price at this point in the game.

I really hope that MS will at least release TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding for the HD-DVD

I ended up getting my Xbox360 this past weekend. I couldn't wait any longer.
Now that i see the price tag on this, I have no regrets. I'm more interested in the separate 120gig harddrive when the price drops a bit or until the 20 gig drive dies.

Because MS has stated a number of things from the beginning regarding HD DVD
1) They want to give consumers a choice.
2) They don't want to support a format that may die.
3) HD DVD drives are currently too slow for games.

nothing about the elite is all that interesting. 120 GB is something that is becoming more and more necessary, but I can still get by just fine without it.

I definitely will NOT pay 180 for it. Has MS lost their mind? They should have eliminated the 20 GB drive and sold the 120 for $100.

They also should have included wifi in the premium.

So any word on it being limited edition? I didn't see anything on the MS page about that.

No, none of the 360s have built in wifi. It costs $99 for a wireless adapter. It's outrageous.

No, it isn't a limited edition. This is a permanent SKU.

You don't have to purchase the MS adapter. You can get cheaper ones.

The only real benefit to the MS adapter is that it does 802.11a.

What in the world are you talking about? It's not like the Core and Premium are being discontinued.

WTF does #3 mean? Does that mean if they made the stock drive an HD-DVD one and still had games in DVD format that the drive would be slower than a normal DVD Drive? That's crazy...

Anyway, $480 is a rip off of the grandest kind. You have to pay $80 more just to get HDMI basically, since there's no other option for HDMI like there is for a hard drive upgrade.

That doesn't change the fact that the MS adapter is $99, or the fact that you have to buy one in the first place.

This is the first Sony'ish move MS has done this time around, and I really think it's a bad idea. But I've posted my opinion in the other 2 threads in discussions to this :)

Also anyoen who think it's $100 for wireless on the Xbox360 ... I have mine on an extra router I had sitting around as a wireless bridge. the router brand new is $50. So yah, you can get wireless gaming on Xbox360 for $50 or less, not $100. I also have my good ole Xbox hooked up to this router, so I guess I can split my costs in half.

But considering it was a spare router anyways (my current ISP has modem/router combo) and now I have my Xbox and Xbox360 hooked up wirelessly to my network through this bridge, the price is basically free for me :)

You don't have to use the MS adapter to get wireless. read my previous post.

I think it was smart not to include WiFi myself. Especially with N just around the corner. N comes out and everyone starts to upgrade and your 360 is stuck on G (which isn't all that great for media streaming)
