If you've had a Microsoft mouse for a while and you've downloaded the latest version (5.0) of Microsoft's IntellPoint software in the last few months, you've probably realized that it was more of a downgrade than an upgrade. Here are a few of the glaring defects:

- Can no longer customize buttons for specific applications
- Cannot map custom keystrokes to buttons
- Removed many commands when customizing the buttons
- Side buttons only activate on release
- Vertical scrolling doesn't work in some applications (e.g. VB6, VBA)

So here's IntelliPoint 4.12 for those who would like to take back control of their mouse.

Unfortunately, it seems like the latest iterations of Microsoft's line of pointing devices, especially those with "Tilt technology" builtin, aren't properly supported by IntelliPoint 4.12. Within the last couple of months, Microsoft posted a knowledgebase article outlining some problems with IntelliPoint 5.0 along with a patch that should address them. Unfortunately, it still doesn't bring IntelliPoint 5.0 back up to the level of IntelliPoint 4.12 so let's hope that Microsoft gets back on track with IntelliPoint in the next version.

Ugh...I hate Intellipoint as well as the Logitech Mouseware software. I just still to the built in drivers for XP....seem to work fine. Of course I can't customize it the same as if I installed Intellipoint, but then again, I have less crap running in the background too. :p

You should read on the microsoft newsgroups there are tons of threads about this, it seems like Microsoft is just ignoring the issue

I was wondering wtf was going on! I plugged my intellimouse optical v1 into a new system using the ps2 adapter, and 5.0 wouldn't recognize the side (forward/back) buttons. If I use usb, it's fine though. Strange.

While talking about the MS mouse software, I have Microsoft IntelliPoint 4.1 installed and would like to know why this software tries to make a network connection. I block it with a firewall and do not let it out because I see no need for that software to be calling out. Is it trying to check for updates or something else?

Probably.

For those already running Intellipoint 4.12 - does this version have the "accelerated scrolling" option? (under the scrolling tab - speeds up scrolling the faster you move the scroll wheel). This is present in 5.0...I forgot whether it was an option in 4.12

An unrelated question...
If you happen to be using Word 2003 and have one of your mouse buttons set to "double click" in Intellipoint, does that button still work as "double click" in the Open File dialog?
When i go to open a file in Word 2003, my "double click" buttons turns into a normal single-click button. So I still have to click twice to select and open a file.

Yes, the "Advanced Accelerated Srolling" feature exists in 4.12.

I can confirm that a button set to "double click" works just fine opening a file from the Open File dialog box in Word 2000. I'm not sure if your problem is related to your version of Intellipoint or Microsoft Word. However, since you're going to Intellipoint 4.12, it should be easy to test that out.

Good luck. :)

Turns out it's an issue with the Office 2003 apps - it treats any double-click button as just a single click in any of the open/save dialogs. Same thing with either Microsoft or Logitech mouse and drivers.
