Microsoft Intellimouse/Explorer Versions

What is the difference in versions in these mice? When did MS go to 6000 dpi? If someone could post a link to a page explaining the differences that would be great.
 
The Explorer version is slightly larger in size, has more buttons, and is a little more expensive.

I use a wireless Explorer Intellimouse and like it. I use a regular Intellimouse Explorer before that and just an Intellimouse before that. I like the optical mice.
 
I use the Intellimouse Optical because I mouse left.

The shape of the Explorer makes it a right-handed-only option.
