I feel your pain. I bought the IE 4.0 (wired) when it was first released and tried it in UT2K4. Needless to say the scroll wheel was pathetic, so I went back to my old faithful IE 3.0 (wired). In fact I have (2) brand new IE 3.0's in my closet for backup purposes. :)

btw, wtf did m$ decide to change the intellimouse explorer line?

I thought verson 3.0 was perfect. It's fits perfectly in my hand and felt solid. This new version feels cheaper and bulkier. if it wasn't for the fact that my 2 year old intellimouse explorer 3.0 started to double click on it's own, I would've stayed with it :(

oh well!

Several years ago, I bought a MS Optical Wheelmouse (which is still working fine, my parents have it now). Then, slightly over a year ago, I got the MS Intellimouse Explorer 4 (wired, and now out of warranty), which recently developed erratic response of the left button - sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't.

I have subsequently purchased a Logitech MX518, and am firmly of the opinion that it is not just for gamers. Using a 1600x1200 resolution, it's much better at the 800DPI mode than my IME was at 400DPI. Also, being able to change sensitivity on the fly is great when trying to "draw" something in Photoshop or Illustrator.

I don't want to make you feel bad about your purchase, but for the record, anyone not considering the MX518 because it's "only for gaming" needs to reconsider.

Edited to clarify timeframes on mouse purchases

Just for your information MS will probably replace the broken mouse free of charge. I had a first edition explorer mouse that went bad after 4 yesrs and they sent me a new one free and zero shipping.

Yes omitting detented tactile feel was dumb.

Gotta have the click or it just works like a prick!

I couldn't find RMA information on Microsoft's hardware site, and Newegg won't take it since it's over a year old. I must have not looked hard enough. Anyway, having a spare mouse is never a bad idea...

Why wouldn't you go to compusa and use their mouse display? I think the only reason MS designed the scroll wheel like that was to have an alternative to logitech. They probably think that some people might think it will be easier/faster, but in truth its awful.

I just found the original information I got in the Hot Deals section:

Reposting Here:

ressurecting the old thread because I have a mouse that died and had to dig it up. Though it might be helpful to anyone new around here. QUOTED from Wino:

The Skinny: Replace your Microsoft mouse (intellimouse, wireless, usb, ps2, whatever) for FREE.

*** YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUPPLY YOUR SALES RECEIPT, RETURN YOUR OLD MOUSE, OR PAY ANY SHIPPING CHARGES. ***

Note: Refer to the warranty or call the toll free number if you have any questions about Microsoft's policy. Below I'll outline the information given to me over the phone by a Microsoft Supplemental Parts rep.

If you call Microsoft Supplemental Parts (800-360-7561 toll free USA & Canada) they will give you a fax (716-447-7330). All you have to do is fax them the following:

1) To: Microsoft Supplemental Parts (<- rep said this was important)
2) your first & last name
3) address
4) telephone number
5) email address
6) photocopy of the bottom of your mouse, with a setting clear and light enough to show the Product ID information on the mouse.

Two days ago I sent them faxes for 2 of my mice (personal, not business). I received the following today:

If I knew it was this easy earlier, I wouldn't have lived for so long with an annoying double click problem in my mouse which I noticed a few months ago during a rather... emotional Urban Terror q3 mod game. =)

UPDATE:

=========

It turns out that each different type and model of M$ hardware product has
a specific warranty duration, so you need to keep this in mind when you
call. This table shows the various products and warranty durations:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q173715

The rodents themselves, in addition to the PN, also have a manufacturing
date code on the bottom label. It will be a 4 digit #, often in different
looking print, like 0299 or 4101. The last two digits are the year and
the first two are the week, so 41st week of 2001 for the latter date code.
If they ask you the date you put the rodent into service, it needs to be
within the warranty for that product, and not TOO far after the manufacture
date.

I love the clickless scrollwheel - It's the entire reason why I i got a new mouse to replace my first-generation optical mouseman (that i still use for gaming).

Thanks for the details, pcgeek. To think of it now, I do remember seeing a thread like that long ago, but for some reason I thought it was for Optical Wheelmice only.

Oh well, as soon as I can figure out where to find a fax machine (the local library may have one), I'll take advantage of that excellent advice.
