Microsoft HID driver can't load!

I have an Abit KT7-RAID motherboard, running win2k sp3, and I can't get the USB to work reliably. It will work for a little while, and then crap out, for example, if I'm copying files from my digital camera, I'll get a MB or so coppied, and then the USB will stop working (with an unhelpful message which I cannot remember).
A reboot will get things moving again. If I use a USB mouse, I can make a few mouse-moves before USB goes down. The only clue I can find is in device manager, under hidden devices, it shows that the "Microsoft HID Class Driver is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)". I have no idea how to fix this. I've tried VIA USB patches, don't do anything.
Please help!!!

some thoughts:

you have the latest bios and VIA 4in1 driver installed? update your mouse driver? camera software/driver?

are you using both usb ports at the same time? maybe it's getting loaded down too much (shouldn't...but something might not be functioning properly on the mb)...can you try a powered usb hub? or a usb card ....both are cheap nowadays.

there was a problem with win2k dropping usb ports, but that was before sp3...

you should write down that 'unhelpful message'...might provide a clue to the problem if you search for it in the ms support page

good luck
