Ah, I had wondered why this happened on my computer.

Nothing to do with bricking,secure boot is a firmware feature,bricking would mean a black screen and nothing else,there is no half bricking,
also not win7's fault if the firmware misinterprets a patch as something it is not...

Microsoft has been in touch to say:

Asus shipped some main boards with their own implementation of a Secure Boot-like feature for Windows 7.

A (previously optional) patch being applied when none of the scenarios that the patch is supposed to address are present? It's one thing to update binaries that may eventually be used if any of that scenarios should ever apply, but clearly something changed in the boot loading process of all Win7 systems that this update was installed on (and it would apply to every Win7 system with default WU settings), which is obviously a very risky thing to apply to millions of systems worldwide, especially when the systems that this patch might improve anything for are maybe 1% of current Win7 systems.

That's why microsoft has guidelines,follow the guidelines and you (any hardware manufacturer) are safe ,do custom some-or-the-other"like" stuff and it's on your own head.
