Microsoft getting (blu-ray) royalties from PS3?

Well, as you may or may not know, Microsoft has recently signed on with Blu-Ray as well as HD-DVD. Specificaly, all Blu-Ray players and recorders must use the VC-1 codec owned by MS, and the manufacturers must pay royalties to microsoft for this. Story:

My question is, if Sony goes ahead with Blu-ray for the PS3, would that mean that they'd have to pay MS royalties for every unit they produced and sold? I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it is, but aparently All Blu-ray products must now include the VC-1 codec which microsoft owns and recieves royalties from. The article mentions how this will cost manufacturers more money. I was wondering if that would include Sony, or if as the head of the Blu-Ray Disc Ass. they would'nt need to pay royalties at all.

why would their hardware require a MS codec? might as well use a proprietary sony codec.. not like anything other than a PS3 is going to read the discs right?

I just thought it would be weird that Sony would sign on with something like this if in the end it meant they'd be paying royalties to a competitor in the console market. But, now that I think about it, Microsoft is probably paying royalties to sony for DVD.
