Lol, in other news, Windows Vista B1 was leaked hours after they posted it on MSDN and Connect.

I was going to post a thread to vote how long it would take for a major bug or some sort of crack to appear. Damn it, to late.

Just like the last time M$ tried new anti-piracy stuff, I don't think it's targetted towards those who are fully aware they are using an illegal copy of Windows. It is to make those who are un-aware they are using an illegal copy, aware of it.

Apparently they patched it (and there are other ways around this that've been posted), but the anti-piracy measure does nothing for people who do Auto Updates anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean by tagged. But its not like MS can take your name off your machine and send you a threatening letter. That would be quite illegal. I also doubt they would disable your copy of windows. I can almost image the bad PR that would genorate.

As it stands now it just blocks your ability to download the updates. Nothing more, but we're only on the tip of a very large iceberg.

I think Microsoft isn't really trying to stop dedicated "pirates", they know that those people will find ways around it. I think they are trying to find people who bought custom-made PCs from the vendor down the road and were led to believe (or just assumed) that the XP that came preloaded on their machine was legit. This allows Microsoft to crack down on those companies.

I have a friend that bought a PC from a smaller computer place locally. She was having lots of problem with her machine, so I went to look at it -- she then gave me all the stuff that came with the machine. Included was a CD for XP Home, with "Windows XP Home" written on the CD with a sharpie. No sticker on the PC or anything. Nice. It's one thing to pirate software, but another to pirate software and make a profit from it.
