microsoft exchange help anyone?

hey guys,

been using an exchange server for months now that syncs mail with PCs and my mobile phone. no problems yet.

today i was messing around with the "manage your server" thing (windows 2003 server with exchange 2003).

i added the "mail server" option and realized i didn't need it, so removed it.

since then, i can connect to exchange without an issue. problem is i'm not sending / receiving any emails at all, and no delivery failures either.

any idea where i can even start with troubleshooting this issue??

thanks!

Go into Exchange System manager and use the monitor/tracking tool to see what's happening or where email delivery is failing.

UGH i'm so sick of exchange, its the most retarded thing to set up!

basically i tried diagnosing for a few hours. then uninstalled and reinstalled exchange.

now its even worse. i remember going through this hell last year when i first set it up.

if i try using SSL i get all sorts of errors. i'm getting rid of SSL and now i'm getting a 0x85010001 error. have followed every microsoft KB article telling me to enable basic authentication blah blah blah and nothing works. have totally removed all certificates from everywhere, removed the options that say require SSL and what not. no luck...

tell me about it. right now i hate technology!
i've switched to gmail IMAP for now until i figure this exchange crap out. pisses me off.

looks like this'll bug me over the next few days while i play with practically every setting i know of and dig through thousands of websites of people suffering the same issues.

Dear Zimu,
I am sorry, we don't know how to fix your problem. Our programmers and developers have gone on strike. Currently there is no ETA.

Thank You for contacting Microsoft support.

haha thanks 😉

ok, jokes aside... i guess step by step would do it!

will post in next post, already fixed the first step 🙂

ok. my first step had been to enable form based authentication, which is all set now. woohoo!

this means that i have SSL working again. i have the ssl certificate on client and server, and my laptop is connecting without a problem to http://myserver/exchange and logging in just fine. sends/ receives fine so i know i have my SMTP connector working ok and its receiving emails.

next step, seems so easy yet its not 😉

my phone. when i try activesync, i get the support code 0x85010001 error, which i've been getting non stop. i remember this being an issue in the past. the certificate is valid and installed on the phone. there is no reason it should not be able to connect to the exchange server!

tips?

If you have a mail server running, and than you install another one over top of it what did you think was going to happen?

The 'mail server' role installs/configures SMTP, which is used by Exchange to send/receive email. Uninstalling the role would uninstall the feature which would leave you in just as bad of a situation. I'm sure it could have been remedied, but it's too late now.

quicherbitchin!

Nothing personal, but if you're going to come out and whine about something you don't understand you're bound to get some flack.

There are good reasons that Exchange is the way that it is. It's not designed to be a fisher-price my first mail server, it's designed to be an enterprise capable business service. There are reasons companies pay consultants big bucks to set this stuff up 😉

not taken personally 🙂 i think i'm allowed venting against a product that i once did set up successfully, broke, and now am attempting to fix again!

also, as an IT consultant myself, i can safely say that people actually have to learn stuff to become pros, they don't just wake up and have all the knowledge! every time i break or fix something in exchange, i learn something additional which i could potentially apply in my line of work. hence the reason this is running a non critical app on my home test server, rather than on a production node.
